i dunno man but definitely stop driving it till ya get it taken care of. If its the t-case like it sounds like, it could lock up suddenly.

Um, possibility of damage to the t-case...pretty high
Damage to the rear...not so much

IN either event, jack it up, drain them, and see waht is low on fluid/filled with metal shavings. 45 mins later you should have the culprit.

Did it lock up, or give you any other indications of problems?

It's under recall. Get it towed to a dealership and have them look at it. They should do all repairs for free. If they don't there was just another thread about this, which has the phone numbers to call Mitsu headquarters.

can you still get the recall and shit for free even though the car is 13 years old?

It's a safety recall. Yes. If the t-case drains and locks up on you, it can cause potentially Serious accidents. Don't take it lightly, get on Mitsu's ass about it.

i was told it is only a lube gear that gets replaced but if there is other damage dont they have to fix that too cuz if the lubricant isnt geting to all the gears and what not it would cuase heating of parts and making them faulty?

carguyvr4
05-03-2006, 11:22 PM
also can other parts of the trans or rear be damaged?

Igovert500
05-04-2006, 12:58 AM
Really depends on what has been damaged. Technically, the initial recall pertains to fixing the leak. However, if the leak caused damage then they are responsible. And yes it can do more damage then just hte transfer case, so take it to a dealership and start applying pressure. If they don't agree to replace any worn or broken parts (as they probably will) let us know, and you get on the phone with Mitsu headquarters. This is a safety recall...they HAVE to fix everything that was damaged. They may not want to...but they have to, so this is where you become one of those annoying customers, who doesn't take no for an answer.

i called and was told taht any recalls that have bin on the car were already done????? could that be form the previous owner and now what can or shoudl i do?

Igovert500

Screw that. What they do is first replace the seals and refill the t-case...and majically it is fixed in their computer. But it doesn't matter. If it still leaks again, then they still have to fix it. It's a safety recall.

If they only offer anything short of replacing the t-case and any otehr damaged parts, get the dealerships information, and the service manager's name. And call the number below.

Here is what I found in one of those threads I listed above:

"Mitsubishi Customer Corrections Dept.
PO Box 6400
Cyprus, CA. 90630-0064

I just called Mitsubishi at 888-648-7820 / Opt 3 / Opt 5 this week, and they are able to look at what dealership signed off, and the date it was signed. This may help get you answers, but you still may have to fight with the dealership. Also, with this number, you can file a complaint towards the dealersip if you see fit."

Don't take any BS about anything. If they tell you that the recall was already performed, tell them that they obviously didn't solve the problem, because it still leaked, it still locked up, and it could have caused a dangerous accident..don't be scared to threaten legal action.

Depending on your dealership and how much of a prick their service manager is, you may have to get on the phone with Mitsu headquarters and keep annoying them, but eventually, if you keep annoying the right people, and threaten legal action, if necessary, they should replace the t-case and any input/output shafts that have been damaged.

If they give you some BS about them not being able to replace teh output shaft, without replacing the tranny:

www.vr4stealth.com has the pics/instructions on that (under repair, transmission).

Basically, the point is, your dealership maybe nice, but chances are they are cheap and incompetant bastards. So don't take any BS, and don't take NO as an answer.

Also, you can search here and find the recall, if htey give you some BS about it not being for your year:

http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/

Don't take no for an answer.

Igo, did you just copy and paste that post from the other thread? haha. i bet you did.

carguyvr4--> i know it sounds like we're beating a dead horse, but if you want your car fixed, DON'T TAKE NO FOR AN ANSWER. simple as that. first do your research, understand why this recall is for safey purposes, and don't let the dealership push you around.

carguyvr4

apparently the recall is closed

carguyvr4
05-04-2006, 08:30 PM
dealrs say recall is closed

Igovert500
05-04-2006, 08:41 PM
That's because the dealership doesn't want to do free work. Call Mitsu headquarters adn get on their asses.

carguyvr4

i was told the recall is closed... adn the site you gave me to reasearch it costs moeny to find out if its open ro not?

Igovert500
05-04-2006, 09:04 PM
It's a safety recall. IT can never be closed.

They can say it has been done. In which case, you will have to argue with Mitsu headquarters. They in turn will call your dealership and yell at the service manager and straighten things out.

Literally of the 1000+ people who have had this issue, I think I've only heard of like 3 who didn't have the dealership tell them it was closed, or done already. Stop talking with your dealership, and call Mitsu headquarters.

Linebckr49

so you're gonna let them push you around and take 'what they say' as truth?

call mitsu headquarters.

carguyvr4
05-05-2006, 03:56 PM
ok so i called the headquarters and talked to some chick..... they told me that the recall was done in NOv of 03 so i was like ok i understand that but if the recall was fixed then the transfer case shouldnt have any problems anymore she told me she udnerstands but i would have to talk ta a service manager or GM to get mroe information so i did i called the dealer and explained everything about the recall and it was done once b4 apparetnly but i still jsut had a problem witht he transfer case he siad ok but i have to bring it in and have it looked at and if the problem relates the the recall then it will all be fixed free of cost but if its not related to the recall it has to be out of pocket and the diag of looking at it will cost me $89.95 unless it relates to the recall.

Igovert500
05-07-2006, 10:04 AM
Is the t-case empty or low?

If so, it's the recall.

carguyvr4
05-07-2006, 10:55 AM
im not ecxactly sure drrained it but hardly anything came out not to mention it was a grey color when it came out

Igovert500
05-07-2006, 10:06 PM
Sounds like it was low. If it was gray that was probably metal fillings from lack of lubrication

carguyvr4
05-09-2006, 10:58 AM
so i think i foudn the problem... who ever put a new cluth in the car before me didnt lube the splie shafts for the tcase so over time they jsut rsted and finally then jsut wore down to nothing and theres no more splines we pulled the tcase out and turned it over and all shaving fell out

carguyvr4
05-10-2006, 09:28 PM
