I have a 90 crx with a b16a. my ecu is a obd-0 is keeps flashing the 22 and 23 codes.
22-vtec pressure valve
23-knock sensor.
when you take the valve cover off it smells like straight gas.
my crew thinks that my piston rings are shot. I have complete loss of horsepower. and the vtec will still kick in then shut off. sometimes it will rev till 8200 rpm's other times 7200 rpm's.
I have know idea what transmission I have and I do not have a clue where to look to find out. there is no sticker on it.
the tranny grinds bad in 3rd and just a lil in 4th. I just want to rebuild it myself.

my question is what's wrong with the car and what do I need to buy to fix it?

Really it could be a few things. Make sure that cylinder is actually firing. Then have the compression checked.

all cylinders do fire. and i could get a compression test done for $70 at pep boys but I was just gonna buy new pistons, rings, and wrist pins. is that wrong?

To put in new pistons, youll need the pistons, rings, if you want rods, youll want bearings too.

fix your check engine lights before you talk about sleeving and new rods...lol
You're vtec is obviously not wired correctly. If you get a check engine light for it, it is NOT working. Check the wiring to the vtec pressure sensor and the knock sensor. Did you even wire them in?
The reason your car cuts at a lower RPM is because the ECU runs in Safe mode with the CEL for vtec related sensors. Fix them.

Btw, compression testers cost less than $20, and you can do it yourself in less than 5 minutes. Like tying your sneakers. Would you let someone charge you $70 to tie your sneakers?

Hehe...maybe he needs someone to tie his sneakers...I know I wouldnt mind every now and then lol, thos damn things are just so tricky...

But anyway, a compression test, then maybe a leakdown.. Check/run the wires for the sensors. Check your vtec solenoid by putting 12v to it and see if it clicks.

The Vtec Does Kick In!! You Can Feel It Kick In And Shut Off. The Compression Is Bad And All Cylinders Fire. I Know The Rings Are Bad.
I Just Don't Know Which Parts I Need To Buy To Fix It. I Can Tie My Own F*ing Shoes!!! And The Wiring Is Good. I Was Asking For Some Opinions.

Rings, bearings wouldnt be a bad idea.....but you wont throw a CEL from low comprssion dude, there is a reason why there are coming up..oh, and vtec will not engage with a CEL on.

If vtec doesn't engage with CEL, then I have yet to drive a vtec car... oh well.

yep, vtec won't engage with a CEL. So, your vtec is NOT working when your check engine light is on. And obviously, your wiring is NOT fine if you have a check engine light. How does that not make sense to you?
