quick KA-T questions.

I'm going to start piecing together a turbo kit for my KADE, and I have a couple quick questions.

I'm already running an oil pressure gauge, so I know where I can T-off to get oil to the turbo, but where do most people go for the oil drain? Keep in mind I'm trying to do this all myself.

About how much cutting/modding is required for mounting of a FMIC? And if I paint the IC flat black, (I hate the way FMIC's look), will it affect the cooling enough to not paint it black?

thanks,

Chad

you can buy black IC's. ill ask a freid where he got his and get back to you

the oil outlet should just go back into the oil pan, but above the level where its full or else the oil wont drain out and cause problems...

you should just take the oil pan off, find a good spot, cut a whole proper size, and weld in a bung that has the same fitting as your oil outlet line.

And im not sure about the IC, but what are you planning to run for the rest of your setup?

I'm probably just going to run a T3/T4 to start out, I'll have to find what trim I want to go with. I'd like to go with a full-race manifold, but we'll see what kind of deal I can find, or what my money situation is. Probably go with an ebay intercooler (name brand, not some random cheap one).

Then I'll see how it runs with the JWT computer for 370cc/Cobra MAF.

If it runs ok, I'll try and skimp out on a tune for a while and just break everything in on 6psi, or whatever spring I get with the wastegate.

also, tell me if I'm making any bad choices, I'm pretty familair with KA troubleshooting, but this will be my first time messing with turbo.

I've contemplated doing SR/RB...yadda yadda yadda. But I've had a KA in both of my 240's over the last 4 years, and I've become really comfortable with the KA, and I dont know how I would do with a whole different motor.

yeah, id definately go with Rs enthalpy. They have way better feedback, and better customer service.

3 day turn around time on your ecu

wotandsdwys
04-28-2006, 01:27 PM
thanks, that sounds good.

but the only ECU I have is the JWT computer

do you think that they could still tune it? I'm probably going to ask him personally.

scott the guy at enthalpy is always more then helpful from what i hear everyone says he is willing to go above and beyond. and he knows his KA-T shit like no body else if u never saw the secret service car you missed out it was a fucking beast

driftking777

yes enthalpy can rom tune a jwt ecu...and no enthalpy doesnt have a 3 day turn around right now, hes actually being the mechanic for the enjuku driftcars, so hes only tuning on the weekends mostly now.

all i can say is...DO NOT SKIMP ON THE TUNING...if you do your shit will not last...plain and simple.

for a t3/t4 go with a .50 trim or a 57 trim...percision turbos have a good selection of them...and as hit and run said, drain plug runs to the upper part of the oil pan.

wotandsdwys
04-28-2006, 07:19 PM
and would an Enthalpy tune be a good enough tune to run 7lbs for a while?

actually depends on the motor, but lets say a decent motor?

driftking777
04-28-2006, 10:17 PM
most people run a enthalpy tune with an safc, but most people will vouch and say that the tunes are so close to being perfect, that you can run them without a fuel tuner, and be 100% fine...no matter what boost. Thats what enthalpy does...he tunes for YOUR setup...you tell him absolutly everything you have done...from injectors, to maf, to any thing that is motor performance, and tunes for that setup...custom setup ecu's...that is why enthalpy is good

ok i didnt know about the enjuku thing i dont know when that started been a few months since i checked the site i guess.
as far as the ic check out this site for anodized black IC

friend told me the site i havent even looked at it

if your gonna run 7 lbs, dont get a big intercooler. id say 6" tall, no bigger than 3" deep. any more will result in excessive lag.

and painting an intercooler will take away its effectiveness, but how much its worth is up to the beholder.

as for turbos, if your every looking to get a used turbo and want to rebuild it. Dont get a Garrett. Yeah they make some bullet proof setups, but so far ive ran into problems with every single Garrett ive rebuild. Wether it be the huge ass snap ring hold the compressor housing on, to the internal bearing rings not being of any similar size to any other company and having to custom order them, ive always had problems. So far my favorite turbos are IHI's lineups. Im planning to build a hybrid IHI RHC7 compressor with a smaller exhaust housing similar to a IHI VF39.

But if you never plan to rebuild, then disregard everything i just said....

DO NOT DO 370cc Injectors if you plan on going about 300whp eventually.

Theyve actually done research on HUGE Intercoolers and SMALL intercoolers and there was no difference that was neglible in spool characteristics from IC to IC.

God this forum sucks now. Ill help out KA bound people.

You said youll start out with a T3/T04E at first? a 50 trim T3/T04E is good to like 400WHP...

As said above, 370cc will be a waste of money on the ECU tune. Save up a lil more.

Hit N Run - I think you just got unlucky, Garrett make some of the best turbos there are. I don't think mitsubishi are all that better, if not worse.

Huge brand name intercooler are a waste of money imo, jr make some nice ones for little money.

I already found a guy to do my intercooler for me locally, he said 350-370 for all piping, IC, and powdercoat any color I want. I'll probably go black, any other color is too much.

he said he could recomend a top-mount. Is that pretty much just like a front mount or what, I'm not quite sure on that.

I also suggested V-mount, and he said he could do it too. Are there drawbacks to having this setup for the street. When thinking about it, you could see how it might not get enough air to it, making it less effective.

I've seen front mounts, as everyone has, and I just dont like the looks of it. My whole idea for building this car is to keep it kinda low-profile.

So would you be able to see it very well with a top mount setup?

driftking777
05-08-2006, 09:58 PM
well top mount is just stupid..wtf...yea lets make it impossible to do a quick check of anything on the motor...

V-mount setup...
THE GOOD...better throttle response...SOMEWHAT lower profile, but not much

THE BAD...have to cut supports to make the setup work...will destroy front end of car in ANY type of front end collision. Will cost more to make mounts cut stuff up...ect...also fmic will be in the way of stuff.

FMIC for the win...if you paint the IC and piping black, it will be unnoticeable. and you can still get in a collision without destroying your motor and car. and is inevitably easier to work on the motor...or whatever in the engine bay with the fmic

if you got a top mount, wouldnt you need to have a big hood scoop (like on the wrx) to make it anywhere near effective?

well, even when he was talking to me about doing a top mount intercooler, he was still pointing around behind the front bumper.

he's an old guy though, maybe he just got confused.

Fuck looks, there's a reason why everyone you see has a front mount. Go front mount, who cares what it looks like, it is the best way to go...top mount sucks, an oil change would even be a challenge.

As far as people seeing your top mount, well, its mounted ON TOP of your engine, hence no, people wont see it when your driving, but yes if you open the hood lol.

all this talk about hiding shit w/ turbo apps is kinda stupid. i mean what the fuck are you trying to hide shit for we all know right when the engine gets reved anyone who is worth racing will hear the turbo and know you are well runing a turbo
and if you disagree w/ me then jump off of a tall building

Its an online subscription which you would have to pay like 25 bucks to see the article.

"Fuck looks, there's a reason why everyone you see has a front mount. Go front mount, who cares what it looks like, it is the best way to go...top mount sucks, an oil change would even be a challenge."

Oil change would be the same for a V-Mount as a Front Mount.

I would NOT do a V-Mount unless you will be Nazi about ducting for the Intercooler.

I care about what it looks like, its my fucking car, so I'll do what I want to get what I want out of my car.

If I do front mount, its going to be black and as far back as it can be.

Where are you getting this info from? I say shens unless a link is provided. And this forum doesnt completely suck, just some of the people around here do.

And no, its not i havent had any luck with garrett. I wouldnt put mitsu higher than Garrett either. Garrett does make some of the best products, but what im saying is if you ever want to do maintance on your turbo, or rebuild it, then your gonna have a bitching time with it. The TO4B/E series garretts ive worked with werent really a problem, but the smaller T25/T28/T3's are just a bitch to work on.

I cant provide a link. You have to pay to see the article. The reasoning behind it was that the Compressor Compresses SOOO much air soo fast that it really is neglible differences.

hmmm ok sure w/e i guess you believe everything you read on the internet. or maybe its all bs because you are so reluctant to even provide a URL or say who wrote it. and what research they did. compressors compress a lot of air but really...10psi over atm isnt all that much. and the difference in intercooler sizes is bigger than you think 24x8x2.5 has HALF the volume of a 24x12x3.

driftking777
05-11-2006, 11:14 AM
just to add my 2 cents...what actually makes a difference is intercooler piping size, people go to big 3+ inches, and yes the compresser has to compress more air, loosing throttle response ect...Intercoolers are usually good to go big, intercoolers if not a good/big size 24x10-12x2.5-3 are usual for the bigger intercooler kits that you get. and those are usually go up until 500-600whp. Can you run a smaller intercooler...yes...will it increase throttle response...yes. But in the future you feel like upgrading to say 400whp then you are better off getting a bigger intercooler anyways. otherwise you'll just be starving the motor of the air you should run at higher PSI's.

Im no rocket scientist, but thats my 2 cents

sidewayzS13

If I provided the link it wouldnt prove JACK....They do MILLIONS of test theyre actually quite repuable. Also...you cant use 24x12x3 as the volume formula of an Intercooler anyways....there is alot less volume in a intercooler then the actual mass of the intercooler. the Tubes and Fins or Bars and Plates use up lots of volume too....Dont cop an attitude with me man....Jesus...YOU DONT HAVE to believe what seems im forcing on you...this is why I really dont like this forum.

In the ARTICLE THAT IS 100% FICTION that I speak of they talk about once the turbine reaches its spool point or point of initial momentum the compressor compresses SOOO much air adiabatically that the volume the Compressor is flowing doesnt take long at all to fill any given volume of proportion concerning Intercoolers.

Pavlo
05-13-2006, 10:59 PM
Do not powder coat you intercooler! Powder coating is tough, it will greatly limit the cooling. Go with iodizing (think thats what its called), jonny race car carry black, good quality intercoolers. But really its pointless, a FMIC is there for performance reasons, and it is not painted for the same reason.
And spool time difference between intercoolers is practically un-noticable, I am about 90% sure that you won't notice a thing.

I'll agree 100% with you...however the differnce shown will only truely show up on a paper (aka...dyno) its the same thing that i mention'd earlier, yes intercooler size will have a big influence on how fast you can spool, less air...faster spool. same can be said with intercooler piping as i mention'd ealier. Just 200 rpms really doesnt make THAT big of a difference, unless your drag racing religiously, and not running a bracket race.

slideways...
05-14-2006, 02:45 PM
doesnt take that long in your time but hmm with an engine spinning at 3000 rpm thats actually a while. also, it doesnt matter what the design is. volume is volume. think about your arguments before you post. if an efficient intercooler can cool intake air well enough, why get an oversized one, not gain any benefit, and have to wait 300 or more rpm until full boost hits? im not hardcore drag racing but id still rather not waste that 300rpm.
trying to confuse me with big words wont validate a dumb point.

if you just think about it for a sec, it might make sense. If your turbo has to compress 10psi into a 2" tubing, wouldnt it compress quicker than if it had to compress 10psi into a 3" tube? I think pipes too large would make a difference, but i havent been able to prove it yet.
