I may only be a freshman but I am really getting in to photography. I was wondering if anyone had any advice to give me to further expand my mind on the world inside the still frame. Like what kind of colledge classes will I have to take to be a professinal. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.:grinyes:

never look for a photo. take a walk and photograph what catches your eye.

classes suck, unless you know nothing about developing film. then take one of those. be selective and its better to ask people of the college what classes to take, they know the courses better and on whether they actually teach you something.
if youre in it for a hobby, have fun and do as you please. unfortunently, as a profesion you need a few classes but it really comes down to experience. digital SLRs are the way. take and thousand and one photos and you can keep what you like and delete the rest. scroll through this forum and see what people have done. We have everything from car action, nature, city, people, etc.
in basic, chris hit it. dont look, just do it. Nike.

i've have a Konica Minolta 5D, that's a very good DSLR to start on, very easy to use and it's got excellent build quality. unfortunately it's out of production now, as Sony's now bought Konica Minolta.

sry for a hijack, but,
i'm also just learning, and i'm using an old Yashica 230-AF SLR, my dad said it was a $400 camera way back in the day. should i upgrade to a DigiSLR? the only advantage i see is being able to see results after a shot, and being able to clear memory of bad shots. Otherwise, my dad is saying this SLR is as as good, if not better, than most SLR's out today.

Sure,if you want to pay for film. I have two cameras. A Minolta and Rebel. One's film the others digital. I use one for photo shoots mainly and I carry the rebel for anything else. Although it's as good as if not better than the minolta, digital is just that much easier so you can take a thousand picstures with having to pay for all of them. Digital is like a vinyl fence or composite decking (sorry, ive been workinig alot) and it's a long term investment worth making.

"Don't look for a photo, just shoot" is the WORST advice I have ever heard for an amateur photographer. Maybe if you just want pics for your myspace or whatever, thats fine. But just telling people to 'take what looks pretty' is an insult to over a century of professional photography. I almost feel sick posting in this thread.

^well, you gotta think about. although the simplicity of it my be insulting, but the truth is, you cant look for a pic. Simple covers of albums are several shoots when you only need one. For that one pic, it's nothing you can plan as anything. Just actually look at professional pictures. nothing is truly planned, especialy if you look at the story behind it.
Although, pointing and shooting is rather simply way of putting it, it's none the less a truth. With film, you obvisiously are conserving what you take, but i have 3gbs of pics and i just got my camera. Although some our just fun while others random, if I hadn't taken all that, those that really stand out, may not exist.
hm, that got a little too deep.
while "whatever looks pretty," women are always welcomed in my pics. :naughty:

That has to be one of the most ignorant things you have ever said on this forum.
A good photograph requires lots of planning, knowledge and skill, both technical and artistic.

yeah, but the reason i'd say just go shoot, is not for the sake of the photo, but to learn how to use the camera itself. once you know what all the functions are on the camera, what everything does, how to do it, and all that jazz, then comes the actual photo.

hows that? look at most photographer winners and the pics they took. Kid surrounded by vultures? think they really went looking for that? or that there's a actually a big piece of meat that the vultures are attracted to and he photoshopped the kid in there. all the 9-11 pics? "Wait, can you two get together and help each other for a pic?" You're saying that's all planned?
Come on moppie, stop thinking narrowly. We're not talking about landscape or playboy but the kodak winners and people in the field, capturing a moment that happens once. And it's not something lasting, that any photographer has a chance to go out there and do.
Now, if you want to include lighting and all that for shoots, then yes, planning is involved, duh.

Photojournalism is only a very small part of photograhpy, and is only practiced by a small number of photographers.
And even then it requires planing and skill to get a good shot.
You still have to be able to anticpate the moment, know what the lighting conditions are going to be, and have you camera set accordingly.
And I have never seen a good photo of the WTC destruction, they are all technicaly bad, and usualy poorly composed. However the scale of the event means the technical quality of the photos is somewhat meaningless.
They are a very rare exception to the rule.

I never said point and shoot at everything you see. And if youre out having a good time, sure, take as many as you want. thats what so great about DSLRs. No, when you have a job as aphotographer, sure, change your style. Change it when youre having fun, but dont forget, who has a career as one? if ya dont, does it matter...good grief.
stop the fighting? it's all good. what kind of camera is it? sure, 2.1 mp are fine for casualness.
