Rear Wheel Problem?

My recently purchased 2001 Escort has a bad thumping coming from the back tires. It is rythmic and is pronounced at slower speeds. Feels as if the tire has a flat spot. I had wheels balanced, replaced one rim and replaced one tire. help, I am going broke trying to figure this out. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Could be a ruptured cord in one of the tires and check the wheel bearings for roughness. Spring on the strut could have broken.
