so i have allready replaced the rear main and the valve cover gasket because oil was leaking out from there and the rear main was way shot.. just checked the oil today and was down almost 2qts allready.. its been a little over a week since the last time i checked the oil.. i can smell it burning a little but i don't know if that's the old oil that was on the engine and the underneath is totally coated from the bad main seal.. question is do you think it could be the HG going bad? the oil pan bolts are all tight.. im running out of ideas on where i could be losing this much oil or burning it.. its on the wife's car '96 talon NT auto.. any input would be great!

The only thing you can do it clean all the old oil out from under the car, then drive it around some and see where the fresh oil comes out.

If you're afraid it's the head gasket just do a compression test. I'm not sure what the specs are for a n/t but i'm sure you can find them online somewhere.

I dont think you'll be burning oil on a bad hg (maybe different in the 420a, but I dont think there are even any oil passages between the head and block on the 4g63), but bad valve seals and/or piston rings would do it. Again, not sure how the 420a gets the oil from the head back to the oil pan, is there a line that could be leaking? Maybe the casting is jacked where the rear main seal is?
