timing belt bait and switch?

Just needing to know if I got shanghi'ed. Took my 95' V6 runner in for a timing belt change at $175, am now replacing idler bearing, upper water bearing and crankseal all totaling $780. Is the normal price (Denver area)?Should I have been told all of these were standard replacements with the timing belt? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.:uhoh: A good mechanic is hard to find.

Did you call other shops to get prices or even the dealer to see what they usually charge?

Yeah, I called around too little and too late. Found some recommend doing all of those things at the begining, others say the old "we won't know until we look into it". Think I need to think through the right way to ask the right questions a little more. Live and learn.:banghead:

It's hard to gaurantee your work if you use old parts that may fail with new tighter properly tensioned belts.
Not too bad of a price for the work done and you're good to go wiht all new parts!
Did they replace the water pump? They should have.

Also find a friend,relative,co-worker or neighnbour who has a house garage or shed that will do you a favour or trade services.Another idea is call your local community college or vocational school where they will only charge for parts at cost,no labour.
Or find a local off-road club as half of the members usually own Toyotas and do their own repairs as well these folks know their Toyotas best,better than dealerships and car mechanics.

They said the water pump looked as though it has been replaced once already and looked in good shape, so no. Still wish I did but was already at my finacial limit.

As far as mechanic's, I've been trying to stick with Toyota only shops. I will be checking around at some of the local 4x4 shops too.
