just get the newest that will fit. If its a 3.1 check the intake gaskets before you install.

as far as i know the 3800 is the same engine block with more displacement... you may want to look into puting one in from a grand prix.... maybe even supercharged :naughty:

then you my friend dont know shit. the 3800 is a 90 degree engine while the 3100 is a 60 degree engine. although it has been done to a 99 grand am and a 01 malibu that i know of for sure, its a nightmare on wiring an getting cutom axles built. and expensive, not worth it IMO.

i would say get a 99 3400 and swap that in but use your fuel rail and injectors. the masrket for the 3400 is groing so itwill be cheaper to put the 3400 in and mod it

Can't we eliminate the profanity? I am a man of GOD and I enjoy this forum, but the profanity is uneccessary.

I had to replace the engine in my 98, blew a rod also. the only thing I could tell you to make it easier is to buy an engine with everything together, that way is will bolt and plug right in, thats what i did. taking the time to transfer everything is a pain. Also get a small torch form a hardware store, for the exaust bolt on the flange. They will be stuck. I had to heat them up to get them off. I then just put bolts back in if the studs come out. Keep in mind they are metric also. I did my R&R of the engine in about 8 hrs. Also there is one trans bolt that goes in backwards from the engine to the bell housing. The easiest way is to get alot of extentions and go thru the wheel well on the passenger side. Thats about the only real problems I had. good luck.

Like a previous poster said, the factory intake gaskets are garbage from the factory on all 3100 and 3400 engines. Make sure if you get a salvage yard engine, that you get a Vin-J 3100, not a Vin-M, as there are many subtle differences, and the heads and intakes are different, so you can't even swap intakes to make it work. A 3400 Vin-E is essentially the same externally, and would require minimum mods to install.
