electronic ignition question

The mustang has been acting up lately on and off. I had an instance late last week where the car felt like it was dying and coming back to life while I was driving home. It would do this whenever I started moving from a stop, and would continue to struggle until I got to 30 mph or so. I checked the timing and that was fine, the fluids are all clean and at the appropriate levels. One of the things I did notice, though, is a small crack in the distributor capwhere the vacuum advance is connected. The previous owner must have bought the wrong cap and had to grind away a small amount of material to clear a screw. I am going to get a new one today after work.

I was talking about this at wark and one of the ladies asked if I had an electronic ignition. I told her I just had one put in 3 maybe 4 weeks ago. She said she had the same problem in an old bronco and nothing she did helped until she replaced the module. So My question is: How do I test the module to see if it is the problem and what kind of electronic equipment do I need?
