'94 escort lx stall problem

I have a '94 escort lx, which was just recently put back on the road. It had been sitting for about a year with a blown transmission, and since I replaced it the check engine light has been on. I tried using a code reader, but it won't read any codes.
Since it's been back on the road I replaced the spark plugs and wires because it was missfiring (before I found the problem I thought whatever was causing the missfire was also causing the check engine light)
Now it seems to run fine, but the check engine light is still on. The only symptom is that sometimes if I coast up to a stop sign, etc, as soon as I push the clutch in it stalls. The majority of the time, however, it doesn't.
Anybody have any ideas or leads as to what might be causing the problem?

I have a 93 with a simular issue. It does stall, but most of the time the idle is unstable... will idle between 400-1000rpm. Had the check engine light on before... ran the codes. Replaced the oxygen sensor.
No check engine light... but still has the irratic idle.
Perhaps Throttle position sensor?
Hope this helps.

Check if the coil is good, it might be going bad and not giving out enough power which causes rough idle and almost stalling sometimes. Check to make sure that the pcv elbow that attaches to the intake is not clogged or collapsed. Try a bottle of injector cleaner.

You might take off the idle air control valve and lube it with a light machine oil like 3 in 1 oil. the CEL can be reset by disconnecting the negative battery terminal for a few minutes. The control valve and motor is on top of the throttle body.
