93 Passat engine codes

Hi all,
Ongoing problems with my friends 93 Passat that she just bought. The headgasket was blown and the trans front pump seal was toast, so I tore it apart and got it squared away along with the timing chain tensioners... Upon driving the car, it would suddenly lose power and the speedo would erratically move up n down. Sometimes it would start right back up, other times you would have to let it sit. I began doing the wiggle test to see if anything was grounding out...nothing. I did notice that the wires that send signal to the coil were exposed due to some idiot beating it up using a test light. My friend mentinoed that when it would rain, the car would cut out more often then when it wasnt raining. I also noticed that the ground that connects the batt to the engine was exposed and deteriorating next to the battery tray. Another thing I noticed was that the CEL didnt turn on during startup, so I tore apart part of the dash and guess what I found! The ABS, CEL,and other light were disconnected and tucked out of the way! Greeaat! So now, onto my questions...how do I pull codes from this ride? Does someone have a link to where the codes are listed? The CEL works, but were do I go to short the test connectors? Also what would cause the vehicle to cut out- going 15-40mph??? Hall sensor under the dizzy? Bad ground? This project has been kickin my arse for the past month now Thanks for any info all!!!

Ok, I pulled the auto shifter cover and found 2 ports. I shorted them out and the CEL began blinking. I got a code 12 with the car off, parking brake on. I also got 3 blinks, 4 secs part after the code 12. With the car running, I got a code 14 followed by 4 fast blinks. Thanks for any info...
