I have a 2000 Intrigue w/ 94,000 mi. I do lots of highway travel.

I burn about a quart every 1,000 mi.

which is the best brand of oil to buy.

I saw that someone suggested to use 0w30 instead of 5w30. Is that ok to do?

the 3.5l engine actually does burn some oil as a result of the way it works...its perfectly normal and i wouldnt worry about it.

switching to a...thicker? i think thats thicker isnt it? im not good with oils..but switching to a thicker oil wont do a whole lot of good, itll just make your engine have to work that much harder, meaning less fuel mileage, and for someone who does a lot of highway travel id say thats mildly important to you:p especially with the gas prices the way they are now.

i know it seems odd that a car in good working order would burn oil, but all of the Northstar based engines burn some oil..from my understand the bits they use to drill out the cylinders in the block leave a porous surface on the cylinder walls...meaning that the oil clings to it better...this is good for lubrication, but also means that some oil gets burned in the process.

your oil burn rate seems typical as said by LittleHoov.

I like Mobile 1 Full Synthetic 5W-30 ~$4 a quart

Amsoil 5W-30 would be ok also.

Nothing else because some of these Synthetics like Castrol Syntec are not true synthetic oils yet are labeled as synthetic. Pay the extra for Mobil 1 synthetic and you will be amazed how much better the engine performs (especially in Winter). I change my synthetic oil religiously around 5k miles also. With regular oil I would change around 3k.

Mobil 1 synthetic will also reduce any engine noise you have (especially at warm-up) Even adding 1 quart (when 1 quart low) of Mobil 1 to your existing oil will reduce the warm-up noise.

Try a can or Restore in your engine. You will find it will restore some performance and if the rings are leaking by this will help reduce oil consumption also. It is compatable with any oil and should help your problem. I have used it in the past and it does what it says it will do!

I use Mobil 1 Synthetic and change the oil twice a year, 5w-30 fall and 10w-30 spring w/ Mobil 1 Filter. So far no problems and it is usually runs around 6,000-7,000 miles each change.

I run mobil 1 5w30 in my 3.5 and it burns about a quart per 4000 miles. I follow the oil-life monitor and change my oil every 5-6k miles.

I use Valvoline 5w30 and change it every 3k religiously. So far it doesn't use any oil between oil changes. It's got 52,000 on it now.

I've had good luck with the real synthetic Castrol Syntec 0W-30; it significantly reduced the oil consumption in our '01 GLS compared with M1. Try various brands until you find one that works best in your car.
