Hows it goin? first off i have a 89 civic hatch with the exhaust that curves b4 the end and goes through the muffler and out the tip. but im getting rid of that muffler and got a new one off ebay. now im sure many people have done this but i haven yet anyways. my buddy told me that the muffler would be angled which is fine i have no problem with that but the thing i dont know is, what piping and how much would i need. I work at a parts store so i can get pretty much anything i need to do this, i just need to know how lol! thanks for any help!!

Are you going to bolt it on or weld it on? A muffler shop can weld it on pretty cheap. If you get a "fart can" style muffler it will most likely have 2.25" diameter inlet which is a .5" at least larger than stock so you should probably replace from the cat back. A bigger cat would help squeeze the exhaust out better. Also, fart cans are quite loud when you increase the diameter of your exhaust piping so you should have a resonator installed after the cat but before the bend to the rear trailing arm. If you just slap the muffler on to bigger piping at the end of your stock piping it really won't do much performance wise except maybe increase the decibel of your exhaust note.
If you notice in the pic my piping swoops a bit before going toward the fartcan. I have a tiny muffler (14" long) and the swoop is just 2" pipe cut from where the old turbo muffler joined it. It flows decent enough and both bends are fairly smooth...

ok thanks, but theres just one problem, lol i dont have a cat, its just straight off the header! then back to where it bends and out the muffler, im gettin a muffler kinda like yours. Do you think i should put a cat and resonator on it? will that help my performance any like they all say they do?

Better get some kind of resonator, otherwise, it may sound like an epileptic weed eater. These fart cans are straight through mufflers (like a cherry bomb).

get a 2-1/4" cat back with a turbo muffler...no resonator needed...has a nice deeps tone and sounds so nice...that's what i had on my civic...i personally don't like canister mufflers

OK so what would be the best thing. i want a deep tone not a weed eater lol thats what i have now and i hate it! I got 2 different opinions here and i dont know which one i would like best

It all comes down to this... do you like the sideways muffler (like the stock one)? If so, then look into Thermal R&D or DC Sports Cat-back or something similar custom made... which is essentially a resonator with 2.25" piping and a Flowmaster or Turbo style muffler.
If you like the fart can style muffler that exits right at the end of your bumper (instead of the pipe to tip deal of sideways muffler) like on my car, then you can look into an Invidia catback which is designed to look a lot like my set up or more slanted on the muffler. Or you can get something custom. Either way, there is always a resonator in between...
Straight piping and a fart can sounds like ass for a reason. Straight through piping and a small sideways muffler sounds okay (I've had this done) but it all depends on what brand muffler you get. Mine was a Thrush Turbo muffler so it suppressed a lot of sound. If you get a Flowmaster it may sound more gurgly and ass-like upon deceleration...
