I don't think its horsepower as much as torque that you have to worry about. I think the stock hard parts in the trans (sun shell or something like that) start to break at around 340ft lbs, but your soft parts like clutches will burn up before that. I just rebuilt mine and put in clutch packs that are supposed to be good to 350hp, after that, they fry. I would say a stock trans might stand up to 300hp, 300tq, but not for very long. You would need to upgrade the clutches.

I think as you increase the power output of the engine the servos on the trans should be beefed up, like the corvette ones and all. These will allow the clutches to have more holding power since the larger server has a greater area to hold the pressure.

Yeah.. if you beef one up a 700r4 can handle up to 450-500 HP and TQ, but remember thats beefed up to the max..

Good tranny though.

what about a stock 700r4 with a transgo shift kit, and a aftermarket tranny cooler?

A worked 700r4 can be good to much more than 500hp.

is an example. Ive seen straight racing versions rated at over 1000hp.

stock ones will hold in the 350hp range. But I wouldnt count on reliability if you race the car.

Well.. you learn something new everyday..

I heard you could beef one up to the 500 mark in a Camaro magazine.. guess I should look more before I go around saying crap.
