Clunking from wheels - turning or bumps

I have been hearing a clunking from my front wheels mostly while turning or going over bumps at slower speeds. I took it to the shop and they told me it was the steering gear. I have two cavaliers with sterring gear issues. My 97 leaks like sieve and my 99 now clunks. I was able to find several TSBs relating to stearing gear issues dated as late as 2004 for both of these models. Has anyone had this problem and successfully gotten GM to replace them out of warranty? Thanks!
