1997 jetta 5-spd

wow has it been a long time since i've raced!! it's been a while, i've only been in this new city for almost 2 months and it doesn't have as much nice cars as the last city i was in, but its all good.....last night after leaving wal-mart i followed this debadged cavalier with a fart can and some flame stickers in the back or something, tried to raced it......the guy didn't want to go....its all good...Anyways, on to the jetta! well, one of my co-worker just got a new car, maybe 1 month or so ago, its a 97 jetta 5-spd. Last month when he bought the car, he told me that it's pretty quick and all that...told me he raced an old skool cadillac and ran neck to neck with it..so i told him one day we should run, told him i had a toyota. He's a new guy at my work place, probably just worked there for 2 1/2 months or so, so today we finally went at it. Both of us got off work at the same time, so i told him we should make a few runs tonight. I told him to just follow me and we'll find a quiet road, didn't take long, just right across from our workplace was a nice road going slighty downhill. I rolled down my windows

me: hey, lets run on this road, i'll honk 3 times and we'll go from the third honk, lets go around 15 mph to start off with
him: allright....
me: hey, drive safe, dont push the car if you dont have to, this roads kinda bumpy so dont go so fast if its not worth it, drive safe
him: yeah....

we make a u-turn and came back on the road, here it goes.....my 1st gear, slighty around 15 mph, he gets neck with me and i honk, 1,2,3, go! I pull slightly, we're about neck to neck, I shift to second and we're still neck to neck with me slightly pulling, by the end of 3rd gear, i had a fender on him, i rolled down my windows

me: hey wanna go again? last one and then we'll go from a dead stop
him: sure

second race, from about 10-15 mph roll, same results, i got about a fender on him by the time I hit 4th gear at around 85-90 MPH, windows rolled down

me: allright, lets go on the same road, this time from a dead stop and i'll honk us down again, go on third honk, allright?
him: allright

we got on the same road, some cars were in front and back of us so i slowed down for them to pass, from a dead stop, i ready to launch at about 3.3k, i hear his engine whine and ready to launch, 1st honk, 2nd, 3rd, go! I pull slightly, but WTF! I could'nt find 2nd gear, mother piece of ssshhh....I grinded and grinded second gear, by that time he was long gone, so i didn't even try, i'm still pissed right now that i miss-shifted 2nd gear, windows rolled again

me: hey man, i miss-shifted 2nd, let's try that again
him: allright, why dont we just go from here instead of making a u-turn
me: it's going uphill though, but yeah we can go

last race to determine the reign champ! allright, this time we'll go a lil uphill but its all good.....lined up neck to neck, i hear his engine whine ready to launch, i follow, 1st honk, 2nd, 3rd, go! amazing neither of us bog our launch, i started to gain right away, but when second gear came along, he caught up neck to neck wit me, 3rd gear comes and I slowly creep away from him by a fender, ended at 4th at the stop lights

we make another stop and he wants to test-drive my car, i do the same with his, drove a few blocks around and switched drivers, at first i couldn't find reverse on the thing, he had to come over and told me to press down on the clutch and then go left, yeah i never knew you had to press down to reverse on those jetta, very interesting......anyways, the car didn't felt as quick as mine, but maybe i'm just not used to it, there are cars that you can feel the "quickness" more and cars that are fast alike, but they dont feel like it, well, his was kinda like that for me, 1st gear on his car didn't feel like it picked up as quickly as my car did....

we stopped a few blocks afterwards and switched owners, had a lil conversation, here's how it kinda went

me: pretty nice car ya got there, what model is it? GLX??
him: no, its just the GL, i wish i had the GLX
me: pretty nice, how much did you say you got it for?
him: about 4k
me: not bad

him: I like your exhaust, how much did you get it for?
me: about 100$
him: really? i need to get one so it'll sound louder
me: allright, it was only 100$ for mine, shop around man

him: what car did you said you have again?
me: i know this guy is kinda new to the car scenes so i go, "toyota supra jdm"
him: WHAT?? that's a supra? whats the difference between jdm and non-jdm
me: same thing
him: but this one is four doors?
me: yeah, thats about it
him: damn......:eek:

him: your brakes were really hard, did you get racing pads or something?
me: kinda, they're ceremic pads if you wanna call it that, mine were squealing a bit last year, so i had to replace them, you dont like it or something?
him: i think i'm just not used to it
me: yeah, yours is kinda soft, i had to press it down pretty hard
him: yeah....its like that

me: i like your shifter, it's pretty smooth and quick
him: yeah, yours is a lil hard
me: yeh it's a lil stiff, you have to shift it pretty hard

him: i need to get an exhaust
me: yeah, it'll sound nicer, Allright man, i better take off, go home before your parents get mad you got home late (he's only 17 and it was about 10:30 PM)
him: allright
me: see you around sometimes, nice race
him: yeah...

overall, i'm VERY dissappointed that i miss-shifted 2nd gear, which i have never done in a race, i miss-shift all the time while daily driver, but this is the first i've missed in a race, wtf is wrong with me :screwy: and a lil dissappointed that i didn't pull more than a car on him, which i really thought i would because i'm almost 300 lbs lighter than him, i wanna run him again in the future from a stop light when he gets used to driving a manual better, it's his first time driving a manual and he only had that car for like 1 month or so, thanks for reading http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/images/icons/icon10.gif
