hey is there anything wrong with hooking a cone filter straight up to the mass air flow without any tubing in between? I'm just wondering because im to cheap to pay for tubing.

There is nothing wrong with doing it this way as long as you can plug the intake air temp sensor into the air stream somewhere. Without this sensor you will experience drivability issues. Also you will not get the benefits of moving the filter out of the heated air of the engine compartment. Try e-bay you should be able to find a cheap set-up there. You can also make them out of PVC piping from the home center.

The intake air temperature (IAT) sensor is not a concern in this mod on a 3.4L because it is located downstream of the MAF sensor (after MAF), not on the input. However, I would not be surprised to see a MAF DTC error code pop up somewheres down the road.

I agree the mod will probably provide no benefit because you will be drawing in hot air from the engine.

A good mod is to remove the restrictive S segment of intake ducting at the input of the airbox and bolted behind the driver's side headlamp. This is located under the driver's side of the fender. And then go with a K&N drop in flat air filter with the stock air box. Just my two cents worth. :2cents:

i dont understand why would it throw an error code with the MAF? is it something that has to do with the distance between the MAF and the filter?? I'm actually kinda liking the idea about the PVC pipe haha. itd probably look pretty ghetto but what do i care-im just lookin for the gas mileage haha. Either that or is there any specific type of metal tubing i should use because i mite just weld one up myself if i can find some tubing someplace.

You never know about air intake mods related to MAF sensors. The MAF sensor provides a frequency related signal proportional to airflow. The MAF/VAF tables for the high, low and everything in between parameters are programmed into the PCM module. I didn't say you will get one but that it is possible. Best thing to do is experiment and try it out. If it doesn't work then you can add the short length of tubing made out of stainless metal or PVC. However, if you look at the input duct side of the MAF sensor it is directly attached to the air box.

As we mentioned earlier the best intake is a CAI or FWI where cooler air is drawn in from the high pressure area around the headlights. The problem is the cone filter will be underneath the driver's side fender and maintenance will be difficult because you will need to remove the fasteners on the front inner splash guard. We went with the S tube delete and a K&N drop in filter on our Alero which has extensive intake mods like a polished and ported UIM and LIM (APoC) to include a RSM Racing 62mm throtttle body.

did you notice significant performace changes with only the drop in?? The reason i was leaning towards the "WAI" was i was banking on the theory that you get more low end torque versus high end torque with a CAI

Really could not tell with just the filter. It does sound better (intake roar) . However, with the complete intake system mods the low end feels better and the higher. It doesn't run out of steam above 80 mph.
