Cars after 1987 Metric?

Was there really a switch in 1987 from SAE to Metric fasteners in domestic vehicles? Someone told me that today but I don't know if it's true.

I'd say yes and no... My 97 GMC has alot metric heads on the bolts and metric nuts but shanks are SAE threads. My 95 Ford has alot of metric but they are all the way metric, not like my truck.

But for an announced conversion I don't think so.

They started switching over back in 1980 and have not got it all switched over yet.
Just keep a meteric and a regular set of wrenches handy.

Actually GM announced a move to metric around 1970. First vehicle with some metric fasteners was the Chevy Vega. Made sense since it had an Opel manual transmission.

My 1990 Suburban is about half and half. Pain in the ass, you have to carry SAE and metric tools.

The last few years Chevy and GMC trucks have metric wheel studs and lug nuts, so maybe they're almost finished with a 35-year changeover!
