okay, I have an 88 crx si. I performed an engine swap from a D16a6 to a
D15b vtec. the distributor is broken on the vtec motor. Can I use the D16 distributor on the vtec motor?

yes. but the bolt holes dont all line up and only if you run obd0.
whats ecu are you runing?
if its the d15b vtec one you might as well just go buy the distributer for 92-95 civic si...it is the right one for the motor

thanks. I am staying obd0 just to keep it as simple as possible. I know this is off topic, but how should I wire up the vtec solenoid?

When converting to a Vtec engine it really is the best idea to convert to OBD1.

is obd1 actually different internals or is it just a square plug swap

yes, completely different internals. The pickup coil has more teeth on OBD1/2 than OBD0. It can't be swapped over either.
You MUST run an OBD0 distributor with an OBD0 computer.
