This does not make any sense..EGR problem.

I was getting a check engine light on my caprice. The code read that it was the EGR valve. Sure enough, the valve wasn't holding vacuum.
I went to the junkyard and found a newer one sitting on a motor(had very few miles on it). It held vacuum fine so I grabbed it.

I put it on and the car wont run right..At high RPM(like right before shifting) the car loses power and bucks. On the highway you dont really notice it, jsut going through the gears.

What in the world would cause that?

Ive just plegged the vacuum line and left the EGR on the TBI. Been driving it like that for a long time with no problems. Just a check engine light every blue moon.

Is it worth running a proper EGR valve? Thanks

ABSOLUTELY! EGR valves are different for different applications, you MUST get the one for your car! Just because they look the same and they fit, does not mean they work. I discovered that with my own car shortly after I got it a few years back - wound up dropping $90 on a new one.

Huh! Im pretty sure I did a parts interchange on it though.. Should be identical. But it woudl make sense..

YOu might want to check the gasket as well - these things can cause both a smelly, noisy exhaust leak AND a vacuum leak at the same time! Tell me you didn't use silicone on it when you put it back together - I've seen this happen before and it results in a near-immediate gasket failure.

Haha! Oh no..The gasket was solid. No problems there!

You have to check the valve to see if you have a positive pressure or negative pressure valve
