I was considering doing a "Eleanor" version of the Mustang GT500 for a local contest. I am wondering if anyone has ever tried this conversion. I was thinking of using Monogram`s GT350H model as the basis, but looking at the pictures of Eleanor, it looks like I have alot of modifying and scratch building to get it right. I`m not sure if anyone make wheels that are similar to the movie car either. Anyone have any tips? Here are some pics of the subject:

I've tried to do it. I used an actual GT-500, but I forgot who made it. When you do it, make sure the front end is right, otherwise it won't look right. I'll try to find who mae mine.

just wait for FLYONTHEWALL to make the conversion kit, then we can just pay him while he does all the work.

I would use the AMT/ERTL GT-500 kit. This has a red GT500 on the box and is often available on Ebay.

The GT350H model is not the right body shape.

If you used a Monogram GT350 race car front apron that would be a good start for additional mods. You could also look for some wheels from an AC Cobra as they often have the Halibrand style wheels that are on Eleanor.

Good luck.

Cheers

Glenn

I know AMT made one a little while back, but I am avoiding them like the plague. Is that the one you used maybe?
Revell/Monogram have two GT500`s available now, but they both have die cast metal bodies, which is not good considering I may have to do some cutting.
I am considering just doing a GT350 version that is similar to the movie car instead of going through all this trouble. The show is only a month and a half away, and that`s cutting it close for whatever project I do. I am not sure how the judges will react to a "pseudo" Eleanor. Oh well. At least I will like it. :) :) :)
Did you finish the project? I can`t beleive I am the first one to attempt this.
On another note, what kind of putty does everyone here use? I need somthing strong that wont crack, and something that responds well to sanding/smoothing.

Man I so so so got what you need u can go ahead and thank me.
I got the exact rims and tires you need I mean u mit have to do a wheel well job on the kit but there what ur lookin for. There the exact same rims just with the Black center and gold tri spoke hubs. I got them from a Shelby Cobra diecast model I recked. I think I can fit them into a pair of tires I got off a prowler model I never finshed. I'll do some mods see if they fit and take some pics for u. The only proablems are they maybe a little to big and mit look like 20 inch rims and u'll need to paint them the right colors also it mit cost you $5 dollars which I think is good compensation for the rims and the other two tires I have to take from my Ford Woody delivery truck. But if u don't want them I'll do my own GT-500.

Its about 11:16 P.M. here, so I won't take long. I'll take some pics of the one I did and post them here. Its supposed to be a look-a-like, not the real thing. And AMT/Ertl was the maker of my kit, it was the 3 in one, the only thing wrong with that kit is the hood scoop isn't in the middle of the hood but more towards the front.

It looks like the Eleanor project isn`t going to happen now. The great variances between AMT`s and RMX`x Mustang bodies have made it impossible for me to complete this and have it ready in time.
However, I am going to modify the 66 Shelby GT350H Monogram model to look similar to Eleanor, with the Shelby 350R bumper from that kit, and body colored side pipes and low profile tires. I`ll try to post progress pics. I ahve Tamiya`s light gun metal spray and Black for the stripes. I think it will still be an instering "Eleanor inspired" prject. What do you think?

awww, thats sad to hear. I was looking forward to seeing it. I still think you should do it. If not for the show, at least for your own satisfaction. Then you don't have to rush and can pay more attention to the little details.

Well, I promised I would post some progress pics of this project that began as an effort to replicate the "Eleanor" Shelby Mustang GT 500 from the movie "Gone in 60 Seconds". I decided to curb the idea for awhile since the dimensions on the AMT and the Monogram kits that I was using were so different. I decided to make a car similar to Eleanor, and this is what I am posting pictures of. I think I have reached a point where I can make some interesting observations so far.
First of all, AMT`s kit is much narrower than the Monogram kit, but AMT has more detail. There is probably about 8" scale inches difference in width between the two.
Secondly, Model Master Red Putty should be named "Red Poopy", because that is what it is like. Atleast, thats what I would imagine it would be like. It would crack an hour after apllying. And if you were lucky, it would be dry within an hour. It also shrinks so much that the lines from where it was used became evident a couple days later after primer was sprayed.
I used the Revell/Mono Shelby Mustang 350H as the basis for this. I will be using parts from atleast 3 other kits though. There is alot of scratch building and modification to get it similar to Eleanor. I still have to round off the edges on the trim around the front edges, and then the final coat of primer goes on. I want to put some type of spoiler on the back, but I want it to be modest, and not "ricey". Any ideas? Here are the pics:

who makes the wheels? pegasus? hoppins?

They are Pegasus wheels, but I forget what they were called. When I saw them, I knew that they were perfect for this project.
As far as the body style, I wish the `67 would have worked out. FOr those of you thinking of doing this one, AMT`s Shelby 350 has the exact same body as the 500, just with a different engine. I am thinking of doing an actual 500 once the contest is over.

What is "ricey"
An adjective used to describe a car that looks like a "rice burner", which is a souped up import usually having a tall wing on the back, a big coffee can exhaust tip, and stickers all over. Civics and Eclipses are pretty popular around here for being converted into rice burners. The movie Fast and the Furious was all about rice burners.

mstngcobrasvt98
07-17-2002, 10:59 AM
For a wing, you could just scratch build one. And by not "ricey" you mean tall im guessing. You could try a Cuda Rear wing or a Plymouth Duster wing. both look good on older cars and have just the right height to clear the side fenders. By the way, nice front end, thats the hardest part I had when I made mine. Just remember one thing, watch the movie as many times as possible to get the car looking right.

those wheels are called "daggers" ialways wanted them in chrome but all they had was gold, the car looks great but for the wheels try to score a Cobra and use the wheels from that.

What is "ricey"

You got it all wrong i use this term for cars that are all sho no go meaning the owner doesnt have anything that relates to the stickers other than the wheels and wing these guys run 18s to 12s

True TUNERS have what their decals represent and they are the ones running 10s and 8s

Ok, I`ll repost some of the info I typed in the first thread, since that seems to have disappeared. I started with Monograms Cobra Gt350H kit and used the front end from the 350 R kit, though it had to be modified quite a bit. The stripes are painted on. I formed the rocker panels and ground effects out of some scrap plastic. The exhuast from the headers back was scratchbuilt with aluminum tubing. It has a fully detailed nitrous kit, including braided lines and solenoids (the car in "Gone in 60 Seconds" had nitrous). I am really glad to be finished this project. I was ready to quit many times. I think I am going to find a new hobby. :( :( :( :( :( :( :(

It`s actually Tamiya light gunmetal. It was much lighter after the color coats, but once I sprayed the clear on, it got darker (much darker) and had a bit of a blueish tint to it. Thanks for the complements everyone!

How come it doesnt have side mirrors??!!

I glued the side mirrors on about an hour or so ago, so my next set of pictures will show them. Although I managed to get them on this model, alot of my models don`t have small details like mirrors. :) :) :) I don`t have the most patience.;) ;) :) :)

Accordtyper:

I got the rims from pagasus. I think they are "dagger" or something like that. The tires that came with them are a little to low profile for my tastes. If it were a real car with those size rims and tires, it would probably drive like a radio flyer wagon.

When we get some daylight here, hopefully I will try to get more pics.

In my picture of the real car that I have on the desktop, there are "foglights" right there in the bottom center similar to mine. I`m not sure I`d call them foglights though, cause in the picture they actually look bigger than the headlights! :D :D :D :) :) :)

Hawk, I won't be finishing anytime soon because I jump from one kit to another. I'm very bad at that. I'll think something takes too long or I'm waiting around for something to dry and I'll start another, but when I'm building something for someone that's paying me or there's a contest of some sort, I'll get a kit done within a week or two. Depending on how much customization there is too be done. The mustang took me 3 days for the putty to cure and took 1 hour to reconstruct the bumper and make the fender flares/side skirts and the rear tail. I'd like to finish it soon because many of the shops that have seen it think that is the only one I should finish. Classic muscle car lovers I guess. Soon enough, it willl be done. -Walter

What happened to your Hamman 360?

wkma7six
08-28-2002, 07:16 PM
Flyonthewall, The 360 is being done for a customer at a local hobby shop. I was just there yesterday and the customer hasn't decided on the type of Rims he wants put on yet. I'd like to get it done already because my Revell 360 Spider is 90% done. You still remember that thing? WOW. I think I put that up 3 months ago. I will get pics when I finish. Too bad I can't keep it though.:(

Hawk, I just responded to Fly's post. To answer yours I would charge about 200.00 U.S. dollars for something like the Mustang with the side skirts, fender flares, Lowering job, and paint (included). Rims, kit, accesories are left up to the customer. This usually depends all on what the person wants. The Ferrari 360 that Flyonthewall is referring to is about the same price. Its got some body modifications, lowering job, aftermarket wheels and some extra engine detailing, and an Italian red paint job. Oh well there are many factors that I consider. Box stock kits like Fujimi's, I have charged 80.00 U.S. Tamiya's at about 110.00-120.00 with engine. Seems like a lot of money, but when you think about time and effort over a span of a few weeks. This ends up less than part-time wages. Just extra cash on the side. I've known people who pay a lot more for finished kits and I'm trying to be fair and within reach for working class people.

I was at a car show recently and there was one there so i took the opportunity to take a couple of close up pics in case i ever get around to it.
