2001 Monte Carlo SS Problems

The car has 12,000 miles on it and is kept in the garage most of the time. Last year I went to start the car in the Spring and the battery was low. I charged it up and drove it a few times. The security light started to come on intermitently. I replaced the battery. Then I noticed that the alternator was extremely hot several hours after I had driven it and the battery was drained. The charging indicator in the car was indicating a 13.8 volts charge and then dropping to 8 volts for a few seconds then back to 13.8. Again intermittently. I tried to start it up yesterday and it won't crank at all. The battery is good. I also noticed that the radio won't come on other than the time, no stations. I'm not sure if this has anything to do with the antitheft system or not. I've suspected the alternator which checked ok at Autozone, or possibly the PCM. Any ideas or thoughts on what to do next?
Thanks....

Check for solid battery cable connections everywhere ,have the alternator tested under load.

John, I also have a 2001 monte ss now has 52000 and this is my second time having which sounds like the same problem, bring it to a dealer and have them run diagnostics because i'm sure its electrical. i just had to have the control module & ignition lock cylinder replaced parts & labor $758.11 which of course the 1st time this happen i had only had the car for 1 year and was still covered now its not! Good luck (I love my car but chevy needs to do something about electrical problems)

I would look for indications that mice or other animals may have made a home in your car. When they do, they like to chew on wires and such, and will cause a lot of electrical nightmares. One note, at least GM's electrical issues don't cause your car to catch on fire like Ford and Chrysler's do.

Im tracking this down too, but I may have found it. could be dirty 60 amp fuses in the main electrical block under the hood. To illistrate my point at 40 amps it only takes 0.05 ohms to create a voltage drop of 2 volts

I did see a letter at my dealer from an individual that had a problem with starting, electrical, actually believe it wouldn't start at all, turned out that animals, forget what kind did eat cables. There are things you can buy to prevent this if that is what it is, luckily having an 01 haven't had any electrical, knock on wood.. http://us.f2.yahoofs.com/rides/24725/__lg__/1173627995_car.jpg?riUBG_FBPku.8HUj
