Money Money Money, Here We Go Again!

Here we go again.... only a week since the car got a new clutch for £300 im back in the garage getting BOTH inner CV joints on the driveshafts replaced.... reason why? after leaving the Nissan Dealers last week i heard a scraping/grinding noise when the clutch was released, so i thought id get it checked out. The inner cv joint on the drivers side was changed only a year ago and the outer cv joint on the passenger side was replaced last month, they put the cause down to lowered suspension and big wheels, so how come nobody else has had soooo many problems with driveshafts like me !!

Anyway.... total cost of 2 new driveshafts £320 + VAT EACH
but as usual i informed them that you can get the driveshafts in two seperate parts which they found on the computer and the cost £189 + VAT EACH, add to that £40 an hour and im looking at another hefty bill.... ANYONE GOT A BOX OF MATCHES AND A GALLON OF PETROL????

So you drove the car in to the dealership with no noises?, they carried
out work which involved removal of the driveshafts, the car is
completed, you pick it up & there is a noise that wasn’t there before ????
It sounds like someone has damaged the joint when removing or refitting &
may not have even noticed. The wheels & suspension
might take its toll on wheel bearings (possibly) but I have been
modifying Nissans for years now & have never replaced a CV joint
inner or outer due to that cause (only damage due to split gaitors).
I think its time to speak to the dealers service manager and do some
jumping up & down, ask to see the joints that have been removed as
damage should be fairly obvious.
It sounds like you’ve been a loyal customer & spent plenty of money
with them, so it might be time for the to put their hands up.
I do not think you should not be paying for that repair !

It sounds like someone has damaged the joint when removing or refitting &

THATS EXACTLY WHAT IM THINKING!!

i jumped up and down a few times when they told me what they 'think' the problem is..... and they said that the cv joints have a different type of grease in them compared to the outer... its alot thinner, more like an oil, and even a pin prick size hole can cause the fluid to leak out... i say BoLL**ks to that and why didnt they pick up the faults when they had the driveshafts off to replace the clutch only 9 days ago.... and how long exactly does it take for a driveshaft cv joint to break if you only use the car to drive to work and home for seven of those nine days at a distance of 18 miles a day.????

I say they have picked up the shafts off the floor not supporting the ends and the boots have stretched/split or some other damage has been done when they removed them....

im going to inspect the old shafts once they are off and jump higher and shout even louder than before at the service manager cos i smell a cover up coming my way.

on another point.... i once got my car serviced there and the back wheel was loose when i drove the car away .....
their excuse why.....
the technician tightened the nuts up but because of the size of the alloys it must have been slightly off centre..... HELLO !!!..... FOUR NUTS.... FLAT SURFACE...... TRAINED NISSAN TECHNICIAN......NISSAN CAR.....OOOH OOOH OOOH IM A MONKEY.....

I agree with nizmo_gt.
I have been parts manager for 6 years at a Nissan dealership and during this time have only ever sold 1 inner cv joint for a p11.The outer cv joint is far more likely to fail than the inner.(I sell 6 a month aprox)
Sounds like some dodgy service work.
Phone Nissan GB and kick up a stink.

now that everyone has sorted out where they are...... here's the next bit of the saga..... the parts ie both inner driveshafts were ordered from the monkeys at wassacks..... i mean wessex nissan on the 19th july I was told that they take 5 working days to arrive from Holland, then i get a phone call from them to say they have an estimated delivery date of the 27th of July, waited till today... the 29th and phoned them up.... Sorry Mr Evans the parts aren't due to arrive until the 2nd of August, THATS IT ..... TEDDY GOT THROWN OUT OF COT. They havent got a clue.... one guy says one thing and another guy says something completely different so i got the number of customer services at Nissan and phoned them.
They took my story and handed it over to their customer relations manager. He phoned me back at 13:40 today and said the parts were only ordered on the 22nd of this month. One part is in Holland and the other is in Japan.... Fook me but isnt there any spares kept in this country any more!!!. Told Nissan the complete story about how i went to the garage with a really quiet car and came out with a bag of nails and they said that if i have a problem with their dealers ive to take it up with the dealer in question. I also told them about all the other problems ive had with this particular nissan dealer that i have just let go...... not any more..... i told them i had a problem with NISSAN not just their dealer and would be taking this issue further...
as a customer that has his car serviced every nine thousand miles, by a dealer (car has covered 134,000 miles) and buys all the side skirts, bonnet grills, door hinges, fog lights and mony other bits fitted to the car from the dealers, this adds up to shit loads of money, to be treated like the way i have to me isnt best practice..... Ive also told them that im having an independent check done on the driveshafts to find the cause of the problem.

Oh and remember..... the monkey at the garage thinks this might be the solution, but then again it might be something completely different!!!

I told him i could have got on Easy Jet for £15 and went to holland and picked the parts up myself And got them fitted in less time than they are taking now, I asked him if i could get the parts any quicker and he said that would cost me more money......

Doesn't he realise that being without transport for three weeks and having no courtasty car available to me for the WHOLE TIME isnt costly enough???? how does he think ive been getting to work and doing the shopping for these weeks..... taxi's cost a small fortune and the bus service is non existant.

Anyway driveshaft 1 is due at the monkey enclosure on Wednesday and driveshaft 2 is due in on the Friday he thinks !!!!!!!!!

Look out for further updates when the parts arrive..... possibly around Christmas Time

only went to Wessex Nissan (Cardiff) once. Ordered rear anti-roll bushes for a 100NX (pre P11 days). Waited a week for them to come in, only to find that they'd ordered new bars, rather than bushes. Funnily, I was told that I had to have new bars, since they came in a kit with bushes. After kicking up, they scrabbled around the parts dept and came up with the bushes anyway.

Moral of the story? Go to Nissan Aldershot, at least they seem to have a parts guy who's actually interested in his job.

As for repairs, I may drive a Nissan, but I'll be damned if the Nissan dealer gets their hands on it. Go to a back-street garage, at least you know you'll get a mechanic working on the car, rather than a trained monkey. There is another point to this. If they're crap, they don't eat, unlike the money-for-old-rope main dealers.

Quite funny, I drove past a dealer yesterday. Advertised on a board outside was "semi-skilled technician required". Does that mean they only fix half the cars they find, or that they only turned up to college one-day-every-other-week??

It would have been nice to have had a bit more help from
Nissan themselves, I imagine Wassacks have a great
big NISSAN sign outside & what you are recieving is NOT good
service. A bit of help would have been nice.

I know what you mean.

Alas, I'm totally sick and tired of working for British companys. It's all about making products dirt cheap, selling it for the biggest margin (normally nearest competitor minus £10), then not spending a damn thing afterwards. That's capitalism for you...

Sorry, bad day...

Anyway, I don't suppose you still have finance on the car? If so, contact your finance company. They are normally very interested in hearing about this kind of thing (they have a vested interest in keeping what is "their" car on the road). Quite often, they'll go to the dealer directly with a little weight behind them.

The other option is to have it out with the service manager and tell him that you want independent verification of the work done and the fault. Regardless, everyone has to comply with the consumer trading laws and you have a legal right not to get ripped off on a repair...

Final option, pop down to DMS Auto services in Rogiet (near Caldicot - M4 J23a). They're a decent bunch of guys who also happen to be Borg & Beck clutch specialists. Have a chat and see what they say.

Took car to garage this morning...... at 10:00 the bloke said to me " weve replaced the driveshafts, roadtested the car and the grinding noise is still there !!!" " we suspect the clutch release bearing" " hang on a minute" i said.... "didnt you replace that at the start of last month when the clutch was changed????" "er yes" came the reply.... "so its your problem what ya gonna do ?????" i asked..... they said "we have to drop the gearbox out and check what we did and replace any faulty bits.... Here's the keys to a courtasy car (poxy MICRA) we'll phone you when we have fixed it".

its now 14:30 and still nothing.... I guess there is something else they did wrong !!

oooooh bugger!!!

turns out the noise was a broken bearing inside the gearbox, which has stripped some teeth off one of the gear wheels...... to fix it...... NEW GEARBOX REQUIRED !!!

should have a second hand one by friday and hope to have the car back by friday evening.

Anyone know of a (P11)GT for sale anywhere at a reasonable price thats not as F^**@D as mine.... when i come back from holiday in September im gonna move onwards and upwards before the engine falls out!

(the gearbox is costing me £375+VAT)
they'll do me a deal on the fitting as the old box is off the car anyway...... thats nice of them !
