Yellow Mercer in watercolor

Normally I have submitted pictures done in colored pencil. Here is one that I did a number of years ago in watercolor. I believe it's called a Mercer Raceabout. The art is about 18x22 done on watercolor board.

Wow, that's incredibly detailed for watercolor! I really like the gold plated parts and the fade effects in the background.
Just a question, do you mask off your drawing when you do the background?

Hi Alex,
Thanks for the comments. When I finished the car I knew how I wanted the background but I was afraid by the time I painted around all the detail it would start to dry up and I would have a grand mess so I made a friskett mask and then shot the background with watercolor through my airbrush.
