take out battery, battery tray, Might help to take of tb elbow too.. put a wrench in under neath (try this on the new fuel filter) and one on top. Rotate oppposite directions. This will get the top fitting off. Now move the wrench on top onto the actual filter body and the one on the bottom to the hard line (you can't twist this so hold the bottom hand still) and turn the top wrench.

Before you do all this loosen the screws holding it to the firewall so that the filter can turn.

Enjoy and remember to use new washers on the new filter.

You will probably need a flare-nut wrench to get the bottom off, i beleive it's 17mm but it might be 19mm.

if nothing else use an impact gun to take the top bolt out. Not the best way to do it but it works

I had the same problem on my 1g. I couldnt get the bolt off (bottom, top was still a &#@%@ but got it eventually) i tried PB Blaster, WD 40, flare wrenches, cursing. But i eventually just cut the fuel line with a dremel and re-flared the line, granted i had to get a new flare nut (pain in the ass, ended up at a junk yard) So if yours is a difficult as mine good luck

I know that fender just said that he tried PB blaster but I would still just try shooting some of that stuff on it and let it sit over night. GL

Well did it break right next to the filter?

broke about an inch below the filter

I took a piece of rubber tubing (thick) and took two hose clamps and synched it down. Since the fuel is only under a couple PSI it doesnt leak. It was either that or replace the fuel line from the gas tank. It seems to hold up pretty well, you can put some plumers tape on and it will make a decent seal. Just my opinion

Or if it broke on a straight section you can re-flare it and move the fuel filter down because the line coming of the top of the filter isnt a hard line and you can bend it to get to the fuel rail

BAD IDEA. first off fuel on a turbo vehicle is at almost 50psi at idle and you better be using line that is made for fuel otherwise the gas will eat it away and clog everything up

So you think i should replace the whole line?

geez, all of this and i dont even know if this is what's wrong with my car! check out my other post "please help! 97 gst"

I know, but i dont have a turbo and it is made for gas. But seriously thought saltypeper if you can find a straight enough place to cut straight and reflare the line you can just move the filter and re-mount it to the firewall. It will be alot cheaper and easier than replacing the whole fuel line

i think im screwed as far as reflareing the line goes because it kinda twisted up. how big of a pain do you think replacing the line would be?

The whole line all the way back to the tank!?! NOT easy.

saltypeper

so you think i would be better off trying to straten out the line and reflare it?

definitely, the line going back to the tank is going to be a serious pain in the ass. straighten the line best you can or cut it straight and re-flare it.

lot of work from just replacing a fuel filter

just cut the line off as close to the end as possible to get a clean start, and reflair it
