in a straight line, there are no "imports" that can compete with it for that price.

Very true. There are some imports out there for that price that you can make that fast but nothing comes to mind that will run with it stock.
DSMs
MR-2 Turbo
240sx
Mid 90's Civic hatches
Those are the ones that come to mind when I think of a car that could have the potential to take on a Z-28 in a straight line. I've probably missed quite a few though.

Probably your closest bang for the buck car that get you into the 11's and 12's w/o breaking the bank (but breaking everything else) is the DSM Eclipse/Talon/Laser 1st Gen's.

Yeah if you could find one of those that would kick ass. I've never seen any in good condition around where I live for that price but used sports cars are more expensive near bigger cities.

You're probably really pushing it if you're looking for a z32 300ZX TT that's under 8k. You can definitely get a good NA model, though.
If you could pick up a TT under 8k that is in good condition, I'd definitely take that over a Camaro. The z32 TT compared well against the Corvettes of the day. I think you can safely say the NA model is on the level of the Camaro, but there are more differences than just the engine type (between the two Z models). All-wheel steering is one.

I would go with a dsm a friend of mine has one that broke into the 12s with a stock turbo running pump gas and almoast 11s with race gas. I think he spent around $3000 in mods and about 4k on the car after a motor rebuild
and there have been people who ran 10s with them on the stock turbo.
Put a fp red in it and it can put monster c6 zo6 on its knees

I saw a 2g gst with a 14b creaming on a c5 zo6 from a roll once too. Could have been a stock zo6 though.
