Increasing MPG Tricks

Well with the gas prices approaching $3 a gallon I started looking at ways to boost my MPG. I read about adding small amounts of acetone to gas and getting 10-20% increases and adding 2 mothballs to a tank. My friend just went to Montana and he said someone told him the mothball trick works too.
So does anyone have any info on these things working or any other tricks you've used?

go ahead and toss some mothballs in your tank and let us know how that works for ya lol.. doesn't sound like it would work but who knows!

Ethanol and toluene have known to help prevent knock and increase gas mileage also. That's all an off-the-shelf octane booster in made of. As for the mothballs, they are naphthalene (two benzene rings stuck together as a bicyclo system), and I'm sure their aromaticity directly affects mpg. I'll ask my prof.

One thing people can do if they are really concerned with gas consumption is turn down their PSI. The lower it is the better your DSM will be on gas. Only problem with that is that it won't be fun to drive it anymore :< I guess it's either good MPG or speed... I'd just put in a few extra hours at work to keep my tank full instead of killing the fun that my DSM and I have...

Upgrade your ignition like I did. I saw a boost in MPG around 2-3 city and like 5 mpg highway after I got the stronger coil, thicker wires, and iridium plugs. And just keeping your foot off the gas helps lol.

Yes sir! Final upper div. O-Chem course. One more month before I take the American Cham Soc. exam. We also had to synthesize our own shiz independantly and have to give a damn seminar next week. I did flavone (-ortho-phenyl-benzopyrone something...finished the damn project and still didnt get the nomenclature right, lol!). But, I cant wait to NEVER see this course again. lol. :licka:

intersting, I'd have to say O.chem has been my favorite course in college yet. The lab, on the other hand, sucks ass. I was top in class of 150 for O. chem I, and if I do well on the final I could repeat for O. Chem II ;)

Holy hell Shpyder.
I doubt the toulene and moth balls will help by 10%-20%, but I dont think it will hurt. Go to www.dsmtuners.com (http://www.dsmtuners.com), find the tech article library, go into the engine one, and near the bottom theres a how-to on mixing your own race gas. Just paint thinner (toulene), mineral spirits (they said to clean shit, like the fuel injectors), and tranny fluid as a lubricant. If I get time tonight I'll hunt it down.

That's quite some achievement. O-Chem is one of the toughest science courses offered to undergrad science majors. It is designed as a weeder course to root out those "unfit" to proceed further down the line; I have doctors and biotech majors in my family...no matter how long ago they graduated, they all remember O-Chem as the ballbreaker course. Good luck with O-Chem II...there will be 10 times more reactions and so many reactions mechanisms, it'll make your head hurt. Infact, we don't get to "true" O-Chem until the 2nd half of O-Chem II: carbonyl reactions. Makes you wonder about all the struggle before...it was just a warm-up to the real thing :naughty:

I got 330 miles on my last tank, I was parinoid about runing out of gas so I didn't push it. Ended up putting 14.6 gall's back in, so I had another 2 gallons to burn. :naughty:

You had about another 1.3 gallons...2 gallons puts you over the limit and your sitting on the road waiting for AAA to bring you some car juice. :)

I ran out twice in a row. My gas guage in the Cavy is jacked, I ran out at like 1/16th of a tank (yes I know, I push it) and the next time I ran out at like 1/4 tank (actually on my way to get gas). Total, I have run out 5 times.
My solution for the extreme gas prices is a bike. As long as the weather is decent and I have enough time to ride I will.

Yeah I'm going to start riding bike too. But I'm also going to be putting acetone in my gas as well and see if that brings the results I've heard about.

Just make sure that if you get the acetone on youself that you wash it very VERY well. Its a long story but I got some in my ass crack (dont know how) while I was fiberglassing once. Yeah, I could barely sit down for like 4 days.

I don't know about the effects of acetone on an ass crack :grinno: but lab grade acetone is practicaly harmless and light rinsing is al that is necesary; we use it to clean our glassware every day. Uh...how did you manage to get it in your butt, if I may ask

yeah, we use acetone to clean classware too, I always spray it on my lab partner for fun (It feels cold because it evaporates instantly). In fact nail polish remover is mostly acetone. I don't see any ill effects of acetone.

Better gas mileage:
Air Filter
Ignition
Fuel Filter
New O2 (if current one is old as hell)
Also, a Good working EGR will save a lot. Mine is shot to hell, and it sucks ass. Terrible mileage. I stopped driving. lol.

 Well, my buddy Mike and I were fiberglassign a sub enclosure for my Cavy. Well, my working-on-the-car pants are WAY to big for me (old pants from when I was fat, lost weight) and I had quite the plumbers crack. We only mixed small quantities of resin at a time and it was always me that was doing it. So the only other chemical around was the acetone. We used it to put our brushes in inbetween resin batches because it kept the brushes from getting hard. The acetone we had was resin solvent, maybe it wasnt quite the same as you guys' acetone. After a while, my ass started to itch, then it became quite unbearable. Anyone ever had swimmers itch? Remember right as it first starts to itch? Same thing but like 10x as bad. So there I am freakin out and running around trying to figure out why my ass is itching so bad, all the while Mike is rolling around on the ground with laughter. Then it turns to burning. So I run upstairs, jumped into the shower and washed my ass like 4 times. Sore as hell, I came down stairs with everyone laughing at me. I slowly waddled outside trying not to move my ass because it hurt so bad and found the acetone bottle. I read the label, it was something like this, "WARNING: Severe skin irritant. In the event of contact with skin, flush with water for 15 minutes immediately. If irriation persists, contact a doctor. If contact with eye or ingestion, contact poison control immediately." So I was like greeeaaaat, now my ass has a chemical burn on it. So yeah, basically couldnt sit comfortably for 4 days and doing my business wasnt exactly a picnic either ;). Moral of the story, DONT FUCKIGN POUR RESIN SOLVENT (or any solvent for that matter) IN YOUR FRIENDS ASS CRACK WHILE HE IS NOT PAYING ATTENTION!!!

Aftermarket. For the 420A they make the MSD coil and the Screamin' Demon coil. I went with the Screamin' Demon and it works great. Not sure if there are any aftermarket coils for the 4g63 though.

you sure it was ascetone...i know from experience that fiberglass does the same thing to you if you get it on you...at first it itches...then turns into a burning sensation....i poor ascetone on my hands to get the fiberglass/hardner mix off...works good...also makes those small scratches on your hands disapear
