2000 LS 2 new problems

Hi, I have 2 new problems this week.
1. Two times the engine light would go on and then off in the last month and the temp. gauge would read hot. After I let it cook a few minutes, it was ok. Last time the light stayed on I took it to my mechanic. He found the coolent had run out and charged me $100. How can I check the coolant myself as it appears to be a closed system.
2. Today I hear a lound sound coming back from the speaker by the back window, when the radio is on and the engine is on. When I turn the car off but the radio is on, there is no noise. Any ideas?
I have 52,000 miles on it. Thank you.

Turns out there was a loose wire in the trunk causing the noise from the radio.
