I am looking for advice on how to troubleshoot and R&R the engine mounts on my nephews 97 Jetta 2.0 litre.
Symptoms are as follows:
When the engine is cold and placed into reverse or forward gears the engine will travel significantly, especially at the transmission mount and then dies.
Once warmed up and driven it "clunks" when upshifting and downshifting.
I suspect the problem lies mainly with the transmission mount due to the
significant amount of travel and possibly the front mount as well.
What I would need to know is does anyone have any experience with these mounts, especially the bolt in the center of the tranny mount, does it have a nut in the end of it?
I have tried to find schematics but no luck so far. R&R procs. would be terrific.
Appreciate any help or advice. Work car down!!!
Thank you.

It sounds to me like your engine mounts are a bit loose. Not much too it, just tighten the bolts down with a breaker bar. The bummer is getting to the things. On my 2000 2.0 I had to take off the power stearing fluid resivoir and disconnect a bunch of hoses.
Good Luck,

The trans mount was traveling upwards over an inch when put into reverse
so we replaced it. Once off the car you could see it was worn out because you could pull on it by hand and it was all rusted out inside and peices
of metal were falling out. With the new one in it does not move at
all.
Now the front mount is traveling upwards when put into drive.
I tried to tighten the thing but it is very tight.
I have never seen engine mounts that travel like this.
It does not say much for VW when several, if not all 3, engine mounts
fail before 100k.
I have a 323 with 280k on it and the mounts are in perfect condition.
