Why is it that almost everyone uses mdf? Why not use 3/4" plywood? Is the mdf more structurally (spelling?) sound? Or is it just the cost difference?

MDF is cheap, dense, rigid easy to work with, and is uniform.
density means greater mass for the same size, mass is your friend when dampening vibration. rigid means it doesnt flex when a sondwave puts pressure on it, and uniform so you dont have grains or warping to deal with.
Plywood is expesive, no as dense in most cases, harder to work with, and generaly not uniform. also has a grain to deal with. :)
