Replacing a crankshaft/main bearings

A friend of mine has an 86 with a four banger that needs a new crank or at least new bearings. Is this a project that can be done without pulling the engine, or would the pain of pulling the engine be worth it compared the pain of trying to do this project with the car on jack stands?
