Last night we had a nasty dust/thunderstorm...nasty to the point where the airport was shut down, streets were closed for flooding/downed power poles etc. And when it hit, it did so with a vengence.
Tonight when I got home from work one of the dogs was poking around in the backyard, which is a mess from last night. I went to see what was going on...and sure enough a little baby dove had fallen from his nest...well what was left of the nest was all over the yard too. He looked like he had been on the ground all nite wet, and then all day in the hot sun. Animal lover that I am I took him in and went to the store to get some baby cereal. He has eaten 3 decent meals so far. Hopefully he will survive and I can raise him then let him free when he is of age:

Oh and I named him Dusty since he survived a dust storm. His eyes haven't even opened yet; that is why I am guessing he is less than 2 weeks old. Ain't he cute?? :D

That's really sweet of you Kat. It's really nice to see that there are other animal lovers out there. :)

I can't stand the thought of seeing animals suffer. I have raised up a few baby birds before, but this one is the youngest. Hopefully if he lives I can post pics of his progress :)

Wow! That's cool! I had to raise a baby bird once a little older than that when I was in North Carolina.

and squirrles. those things are little monsters. So i shoot em. Dont make em suffer though. Sometimes they try to wage war on me, so i have to shell them with explosive rounds. And mines. And pits of death. And flamethrowers (well not currently, but once i get a working flamethrower, there's gonna be some fried squirrel around here). And in the off chance that i can catch an officer or two, i usually go out to the bridge and make it public spectacle for all the other little private squirrles to see their leaders hanged.

He is doing much better this morning, and ate a nice big breakfast. Made it thru the night with no problems. My mother works at a retirement home so she took him today so that some of the residents can see him...since most elderly people get a kick out of stuff like that. Then tonight I will get him back and then he gets to go to work with me. I found some baby bird food in my freezer, left over from another visitor...I have raised a few wild birds in the past but this one will be the youngest. I also raised lovebirds when I was in high school, but the babies stayed with the parents until they were more developed. I am pretty sure he will make it thru now...so I'll try to get some feeding time pics later :D

That's weird, it doesn't look like a dove... more like a duck. Cool though... I raised an orphaned dust bunny once.

i have a heart for animal's as well, 2 dogs, 2 geckos, 3 cats, shits of fish..........but i read in the calgary sun this morning, a bunch of 25+ year old guy's were out drinking, started up a bbq and threw a kitten on the bbq and started poking at it while it was meowing to death then started meowing like the poor cat and laughing, then the neighbor walking by saw this and took the cat off the grille and tried saving it but it had to be put down because it's eyes were melted/burned away and it's respiratory system was shutting down..........very very sad..........

That's very sad story, mentel. People who treat animals like that should suffer the same death, only slower :(
Well my own sad story: I am sad to report that little Dusty has passed on to the big tree in the sky :( He was doing fine thru yesterday. This morning he didn't eat as well but otherwise was acting normal. Just before my lunch hour I decided to hold him for a few minutes...he liked cuddling into a warm hand and sleeping. Well he did the usual...got comfortable and went to sleep. A few minutes later he was gone. He left peacefully. It was pretty depressing, having him die in my hand and at work, but I am glad I gave him a few extra days and that he died like a little king.:crying:

Poor little man. :(

I am sorry to hear that Dusty died.
One time I was eating lunch with my ex when this lady in a Camry (its always a Camry) ran over a herd of ducks that were crossing the street. The little baby duckling were turned to oatmeal, but a few survived. My ex & I ran over and grabbed the poor survivors who were missing toes but alive. They died before we could do anything. What really ticked me off was that the lady in the Camry said, "They're just ducks!".
