ive read several posts about a slip yoke being the cause for a clunk from start off. but when i jack up my rearend and have someone hold one wheel and i wiggle the other wheel it sounds like something is broke inside my rearend. also i have factory limited slip. i know i should take off the diff cover and look but i was hopeing that someone here has an idea

only way to tell is to take off the slip cover. only one other thing it can be. Check the rear drive shaft. it may be rusting up. mine makes noise too from take off and that is what my problem is.

Oh I have an idea, your pinion shaft (not pinion gear) has worn the support holes in your carrier oval shaped and soon it will rip the carrier in half (probally on a right turn). Then the loose ring gear will completly destroy everything in the rearend like a blender.

wow. thats a scary thought. i have no idea what a pinion shaft or carrier holes are. i understand blender though.

I have a 2005 crew cab 4x4 and I have a loud clunking , seems worse on slippery surfaces , like ice , seems as if the RR starts to spin and then the LR engages but clunks real bad . The other day I had it happen just briefly on gravel and then I had to back up , when I did I also had to turn and when I did so the rear end just jerked and bounced just as if it was locked up as if it had a solid axle . I think I need to go in for some warranty work !

You are right, it does sound scary. I know exactally what he is talking about cause it happened to mine last spring, well almost. One of the spider gears cut into the pin it rides on and basically wore it out till the gears were not lining up enough which in turn took out the spider gears. I got lucky cause that is all that happened, the bearings, crown and pinion were still ok cause when it did let go nothing really broke, it just stripped the spider gears and when i took it to the shop to get it fixed i got up enough speed and was totally off the throttle going around corners which stopped it from hammering out the gears even more because under power they would just slip (clunk grind and bang) so the guys at the shop said that definitly saved alot of damage as well.

To me it almost sounds like yours is working like it should, that is what the governor style lockers from factory do. One wheel starts to spin and it turns a smaller gear on a cam which locks the differential making it a solid axle (posi), and if it locks hard enough it will hop on turns till it releases cause in an open axle or one withot a posi when you turn the outside wheel turns faster than the inside one, but when it is locked both turn at the same speed so the inside tire on a turn is actually spinning because it is going the same speed as the out side tire. If it is really a concern to you, take it in and have it looked at.
