Like any other car the rotary is only as good as the maintenance it has had. You dog any motor and it's not gonna last. Average life of a rotary that has been run to death is 100k or less, I have seen some that where babied, and lasted for 200K.

The one thing you have to always keep in mind with a rotory is that it eats oil by design. While on most piston engines you can just change the oil every 5k miles and neglect it the rest of the time, you can't do that in a rotor. You'll just wind up running out of oil and destroying the engine. Check the oil every time you fill up, and put some more in when you get low.

I drive mine really hard, going to redline all the time and sometimes past it. I have 170K miles on it. No engine reliabilty problems, some electrical problems but from what I've seen surfing the net eletrical problems are common on 2nd generation.

That's another thing... RX-7s are meant to be driven hard. If you baby it too much and always keep the revs down below 4k, you'll build up carbon deposits from the oil being injected into the combustion chamber. Eventually when those deposits get to be too much they can score the housings and even cause the engine to seize.

I hit 6 to 7k+ RPM at least a couple times a day any my car loves it. :D

uh speaking of which, my rex has a rough idle, and i dunno what it is. When i drive normaly, either bashing or babying it, it purrs, but when it comes to idle, i can feel to bump around, and see the needle tweeter. It has died a couple times on me right when i started if i didnt hit the pedal real quick, and sometimes when i start it, (cold) instead of shooting up to 3000 rpm's for 20 seconds like it should, it goes back anf forth between 1000-1500 rpms. Electrical, or engine?
