84 benz 300 DT--have ticking noise-please help

thanks for looking,started last nite.started hearing a ticking noise in the rear end.the faster i go the faster it ticks.i took off the drivers rear tire and saw a bunch of tape wrapped around the axle and some was in the boot that closet to the pumpkin,can that be causing the ticking noise?please help

Sounds like a bad axle shaft to me. Drive it up on ramps, and see if you can move the axle back and forth. This will surely tell you the state of your axles.

what did taking the tape off do?
