I have just come across an 84' CJ7 w/ I-6 and manuel tranny. The frame and drive line look great but the body is showing its age. Any pointers to were I might go to look at a new body? Also I would like to ID what rear-end I have, Its got a completely round diff cover w. allen bolts, NUmbers off the casting are N 891 4115 3235891 no tag. The X-fer case is Dana C300-15-2 Serial 3076-78 ,309007 4 5364854, the front diff is a partial 8363738/49-18. It has I believe a 4" Trailmaster lift w/ 33x12.50 R15's (dunlop Radial Rovers). Any help/ pointer to I D these parts and also is this too much of a lift for that type of rear end?

I dont claim to be a CJ expert but I think I can handle your questions.
The front axle is a Dana 30, the rear axle is an AMC corporate 20. I think the manual transmission choices for the year and engine were the T-176, or T-5 depending on whether its a 4 or 5 speed.
The AMC 20 isnt too bad of an axle but it does have weaknesses. It has two piece flanged axleshafts/hubs. These can strip out or break off with abuse. Many of them, especially on lifted Jeeps, have already been replaced with one piece units. They also tend to be a little weak where the differential housing meets the axle tubes. They can be welded or trussed there.
Put a one piece axle kit in if it doesnt have one already and it will be fine with 33s.
There are body kits everywhere. You can choose to stay with steel, go with aluminum, Kevler or fiberglass. Try Quadratec, 4WD Hardware, JC Whitney. Do a search for Jeep body kits and I'll bet you find at least 20 places selling different kits.

The Model 20 rear end is comparable to a Dana 44. The ring and pinion are actually 8 and 7/8ths while the 44 has only 8.5". The 20 has 29 spline shafts, where as the 44 has 30 spline. The N code on the tells you it has 3.54 gears(which will be ok on the highway, but no fun in the city). It is also a trac-loc LSD.

Thanks for the info, I have a feeling that this jeep will be allot of fun for me and my wife to work on. I have a friend that can weld a new floor pan in it, the drivetrain I can do. thanks again.
