mx-3 smoke on start up

It is '93 4 cylinder. I have been told that it may be the valve seals. It smokes for less than one minute but is heavy. It is most noticable when it is cold. Has anyone else had this problem. It does not do it unless the car has been sitting for more than 8 hours. Compression is fine. It will pass an emission test.
