Grind when shifting

In my 5 speed 90 si whenever i take off in 1st gear and try to switch fast it grinds. If i push the clutch and wait a second its fine, just when switching quickly. I know i am pushing the clutch to the floor, and my shifting habits seem to be ok as i drove my brothers 5 speed HX almost daily and never had that problem. Any of u know what could be the problem??? - thanks
BTW, it only happens in gear 1-2, the rest are fine.

Yea, i been searching around and its probably my syncros. I have seen alot of people are using redline gear oil but am not sure which one of the two weights to get. Anyone use redline gear oil??? if so which weight do u use?? -thanks

my Si transmission did that too, I went to honda and bought me some Honda MTF(manual tranny fluid) and changed the tranny oil in my tranny and it stopped the grinding a little bit...but it sure helped alot!

before you go out and buy a new transmission got and replace your shifter bushings if they are original from the car and have alot of play in them that may account for the grinding. I know when I replaced mine (when I put in the B&M shifter) It made a world of difference nice clean crisp shifts and the grinding I would get occasionaly in 2nd and 3rd were gone.
the bushings are like 10$ and they are relatively easy to put in.

Sounds like the Syncro.
It does the same thing to me into 3rd gear.

Yeh its your synchros. I use redline tranny fluid and it works pretty damn well. I got the mt90. I think its a bit thick but it doesn't hurt it at all, especially if u have high miles on ur tranny. My friend been using the redline mt90 and he had it for a year and he has no problem what so ever.:)

I've got the same problem as you, and I just ordered the Neuspeed shifter bushing, so I'll let you know how well that helps.

Wow, just replaced with redline tranny fluid MTL and it doesnt grind anymore. U guys should try that stuff (whoever doesnt use already)
But the only problem now is i think i either have to much or two little in there. I only have ramps to get under the car so its not level to check the fluid. (Keep in mind the car is lifted in the front a little) I drained all the old fluid. took a hose and connected to a oil filler cup and put the other end in the fill hole. Put the first quart in and then the second, book says takes 1.9 but figured a little would spill when i take the hose out of the fill hole so just put both. got the screw ready and pulled the hose and it came pouring out. I put the screw on pretty fast but still lost a little. I caught it all in the drain pan with the old fluid and jsut figured i would measure how much total minus 1.9 and that would be the extra that fell out. When i poured all the fluid into a milk gallon it was only about 1/3 way full. So either the fluid was low in the first place or since it was on a ramp not all drained out in the first place.
My question is how important is it to have exactly the right amount of fluid?? It seems fine, shifts sooo smooth, can swith super fast no grind, etc. but dont have any way to get it up level. maybe i can take it to quaker state and ask to let me go under my car for a couple of minutes. -thanks

Thats cool that it fixed your grind, i priced 1-2 syn. and 3-4 syn. from honda ...Man are they big money to replace. You cant get just the brass syn. you have to get the whole thing. What weight did you go with?

Maybe I should do that... How would I go about changing the tranny fluid? I've never looked before...

I went with the lighter weight MTL. Some people use MTL90, while some people say MTL90 is to thick for honda trannys. Sort of like the 5w-30 or 10w-30 argument. After more testing it still grinds sometimes, but it made a hell of a difference. I just have to pause a split second now compared to before i had to let my RPM's drop not to grind. I would still recommend trying it out.
As for changing it, there are two screws on the tranny, a drain and a fill.
