The ls tranny is hydro, so you need to buy the hydro conversion kit. It has longer gears and isnt good if your going turbo. The b16 Y1 tranny has shorter gears and is cable, so it might suit you better, but thats up to you.

yeah im sure i would like the b16 tranny better but cant afford it right now. and would you double check that whole "ls trannys are hydro" because i have seen some that were cable. it would be nice to be sure. and i always thought that longer gears would be better for the turbo setup because short ones cause turbo lag. and long ones have more spool time for the turbo. thanks

no, not all ls transmissions are hydro, the '94+ ones are; but the older ones are cable. If you want faster acceleration, go with the shorter tranny. If you still want some kind of decent fuel economy, then go with the longer geared tranny.

Ok. I can tell you (because I have one) that the 93 integra tranny was hydro, so I would bet that all before are as well...also, the YS1 has some short freaking gears..the shortest of the cables Im told. The LS has very very long gears. Long gears are beneficial for a turbo set up not for spool time, but because you can stay in boost longer, before you have to shift gears..allowing you to get longer power boosts from your turbo, a shorter one would just have you spinning up the turbo and then blowing off any boost you may have made...

Unless you're boosting 20+ PSI you're still going to be faster with a the shortest geared transmission you can get.

Put up 2 boosted cars that are exactly the same except one has a long geared tranny and the other has a short geared tranny. The short geared tranny will smoke the long geared tranny in the ¼ mile, on the highway to a specified mph, or exiting a tight corner. The longer geared tranny will give you a higher mph, that's it. And have fun praying, while you're trying to redline your boosted engine (reach the highest mph), that something doesn't give from all the heat you're producing. You don't gain hp by getting a longer geared tranny, but you get to your max power slower. Just more BS info that spreads through the world wide web.

Hey, I didnt say that you WANT the LS, there are other shorter geared ones that arent too short, I would never touch an LS, boosted or not......but a very short trans is not all too wise either...and sure, with our light cars, why not go for the shorty?...

what? I'm hoping you meant to say the OPPOSITE! 93 integra tranny's are NOT hydro. ALL 90-93 integra tranny's are cable. FACT.

s1, j1, ys1, and y1 integra trannys are all cable trannys.
so that makes the 90-93 teg trannies cable.

Best would be different for everyone. You have to ask yourself, do you want a higher top speed, or do you want faster acceleration. If you want a high top speed, get the 90-93 LS's A1 or USDM S1. If you want top acceleration, get the J1 or the Y1. If you want some happy medium in between, get the YS1. Not sure where the JDM S1 fits in all of that off the top of my head though. I know the Y1 has the shortest gears of ANY bseries tranny ever made, but it only has a 4.2 final. The J1 has slightly longer gears, but has a 4.4 final.

Are the YS1 trannies rare? I will be swapping eventually (like everyone else) but it will be awhile and I'm just going B18 most likely, but I don't want to go from a d16 to a slower b18 as far as acceleration goes...

The YS1 is only in the 92-93 integra.

you have to be careful w/ the YS1 though. Alot of people think it only came on the USDM 92-93 GSR. That's false. It also came on the JDM B16 90-93 integras w/ an optional LSD, which is still the same tranny. But, there were also some 90-93 integra LS/GS/RS's that came with a YS1 and it has the same gearing as the USDM A1/S1.
The JDM S1's are the same as the JDM J1's.
The JDM S1's are the same as the JDM J1's.

LOL...my Y1 is LSD! The gears are CRAZY short though...with my B20 I was topping out near 120-125 MPH, tapping the limiter in 5th!

Ah well I feel better then, I hit 120 in 4th and im not hitting the limiter...ok so 118 then the damn PW-0 shuts me down...bah, I dont need to die TODAY.

you have to remember though, that was with an obd0 pr4 which limited me to 6800 rpms...I'm sure the extra 1400 rpms in each gear would help....
I'll be hitting 8600 at least w/ my lsvtec...so i'd hope I can hit 150 mph now....
not saying i'll ever do it though....
:grinno:

I don't trust my car to do that kind of speed, Ive got a totally shot upper ball joint and a worn out turnbuckle..talk about torque steer.
