I have the base cluster in my 87, and I want a set of gauges without hacking my car up. Would the upgraded cluster fit in place of the base cluster without serious modification? Im looking to just unplug and plug back in. How easy would this be?

That won't be a plug and play situation, unfortunately, as you will have to change the wiring under the dash as well.

what would have to be changed for wiring? i would probably have to change the temp. sending unit, but i looked up a schematic, and it only showed one for the gauge package, so i figured they were both the same.

An easier solution would be to remove the dash pad, unbolt the trim plate over the glove box and install your gauges in the trim plate. There's plenty of room for up to four conventional gauges. There are adapters that allow an angle mount so they will point to you. I bought a new trim panel before hacking up the old one just in case I wanted to return it to stock.

The 1985 @ newer dashboards do not have a removable trim plate - it is an integral part of the dash assembly.

Find a set of 9C1 gauges, get a Dremel and cut out the area of the dash where the cigarette lighter is, and set those up. The bonus of this is that you can find a 9C1-style 'certified' speedometer to put in your current cluster without modifications (120mph vs. 85mph). You can't do that with the UF7 cluster as the speedometer is of the round type (ni a square mount) and smaller.

This is an example (but the pic isn't that great for detail) of how Chevy prepped the 9C1 cluster - note the gauge set where the lighter would be, and the lighter (not in the picture) moved to the other side of the radio cluster.
