Another '98 not starting

This will probably be obvious to the experts (I hope).
1998 1.3l will not start. Nothing obvious happened when this started. Here is what's going on:
Turn the key and the fuel pump fires up for a few seconds, crank the key and the engine cranks over fine but will not start. I give it a little shot of starting fluid in the air intake and it starts up and runs great. Never misses or stalls, in fact, it drove from Georgia to Michigan without a problem except anytime you stop the engine, you need to give it a squirt to starter fluid to get it going.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
