Using Synthetic Oil

I need to change my oil soon and I was wondering if synthetic oil will have any effect on my truck which has probably been using regular oil for its entire life.

Well it could hurt, depending on the condition and milage of the engine. There may be sludge clogging up some places that would/could otherwise be leaking. Synthetic could clean this sludge out thereby causing leaks. But in this case the synthetic would only be doing its job, in my opinion synthetic works great and I use it every time I change my oil (funds permitting).

You can change to or from synthetic at any time. It will cause no harm. IMO IF it would happen to CLEAN THE SLUDGE out of your engine that would be a good thing. If you would happen to get a leak because some sludge was removed I would say that is something that should be taken care of anyways. But I'm sure you will be fine. If it has made it that long on regular oil I would just keep on using the same regular oil. And remember to use a good oem type oil filter like AC-delco.
Higher milage engines are kinda like a PC/computer they do not loke a lot of changes.
I am from the old school when you find a good brand of oil just keep on using the same kind of oil all of the time.
To many fast oil change places just throw in whatever brand they have on hand.

I agree with MT-2500 on this one. I believe that synthetics are a waste of money on a non-modified, non high-performance car. I have owned many cars in myu life, always using Valvoline 10w30. I have yet to have an oil related failure, and they all had over 200k on them and were running fine when I sold them. Synthetics also flow slightly thinner than the same weight conventional, so that's where the leaks come from. I'd stick with a quality conventional, as there will be no advantage to switching to synthetic on a high mileage engine.

isnt it true that once you switch to something like valvoline 10,000 or 15,000 mile oil, you shouldnt switch back to conventional oil.

Synthetic oil is VERY good to switch to. I recommend either Amsoil or if you can't find a dealer near by or don't want to order it online, then Valvoline Synthetic oils. My wife's Chevy Lumina has a 3.1 L engine in it and I changed to Valvoine Synthetic very soon after we bought it at 138,000 mile (thereabouts) and now it has 210,000 miles on it. Makes GREAT gas miles as well. That is a side benefit aside from lower friction and wear, that most people negelect to think about. We get 34.6 average MPG on a trip using synthetic. If regular oil was a nickel a quart or even free I'd still buy the synthetic for the long term benefits for my engines and my pocketbook in savings.
