my airconditioner takes R-12 and I would like to convert it to 134A, is this a good thing to do on a r-12 compressor. Also last year the AC worked this year it has quit cycling, I figure it is low on charge. If the charge is that low is it ok to add 134A or do I still need to have a vac. pulled on it.
Any info would be very helpfull and apreciated !!!!

I would say just get it retro fitted for 134A. Lot's of shops do it. Try Pep Boys

I Dont have a pepboy here, This is something I would like to change myself if I can figure out if it is ok to add the 134A to the R-12 system without hurting anything.

You can't add 134a to an R-12 system, they are incompatable. You can pick up a conversion kit from just about any auto parts store.
If the compressor has quit cycling completely, you may need to replace it. It isn't very hard to do, and you can either pick up a compressor from the dealer ($$$$$), a parts store (much cheaper) or a junkyard - many of the yards offer a 90 day warranty on the parts that you get at them, just ask them about it.
I would recommend making sure that the system is completely purged of R-12 before doing the retrofit, the directions for everything are in the kit's.

So before I try to do the conversion I need to make sure there is no R-12 left in the system. I believe their is a small leak in the system thats why the compressor isnt cycling anymore. thanks for the help.

I had an 86 camaro that ran out of freon, the r12 type. I just went down to walmart and went to the autoparts section. I picked up an all in one box of the stuff. Contains the adapter to hook up the fill hose, the hose to fill, and enough freon and r12 compatable oil to recharge the system. Air conditioning ran fine for 4 years before the car junked me.

Advance carries a neat little R-134 conversion kit that comes with a cd rom instruction disk for less than 35 bucks. used it on my son's Corsica and will use it on my Blazer very soon now as it now won't work either. Not too difficult and it comes with some 'stop leak" added for minor leaks. I am told the best thing to do is have the system flushed, change oil in compressor and replace seals. However a lot of folks do it my way and it works fine. You probably should try to find the leak, might just be a cheap seal.
