95-98 Remote Re-Sync....

The GM service manual for the '97 Riv says that if the remote lock-unlock buttons are pressed too many times, while outside the range of the vehicle reciever, the system will become unsyncronized and inoperable. To re-synk press and hold the lock and unlock buttons at the same time for 8 seconds.
The horn will beep once indicating that the system has re-sync'd.

i always wondered why i had to reset every once in a while, now that i think about it i have pressed it a lot and then wondered why it wouldnt work 2ft away even tho the bat was good...it seems like the lock will almost always work but the unloack gets blocked if it is pressed too many times.
