From what I've heard, the 4-1 give more hp in top end, but sacrifices in a drop in power in the low end. While the 4-2-1 is supposed to give a gain across the powerband just not as large of a gain as a 4-1.

I've got a cheapo 4-1 on my car, yes it screams like a bat outta hell on the topend its pretty crazy I must say. Down low, eh its not acting like it should right now cuz the rest of my exhaust is stock mostly. But on a good day when its not actin up low end power is about the same as the it was before nuttin to special, maybe a bit better. For street driving i recommend the 4-2-1 it gives the car better midrange, but 4-1's will work too as i'm finding out.

Personally I'm more a fan of the 4-1 header design because I look at it this way: You're not buying a header so you can get away from the stop light without having to push the gas pedal down as far, your buying one so your car will be faster when you're racing it. Who races at 3,500rpm? Personally when I'm racing I spend my time in the 6500 - 8000 range so I don't see why I'd be worried about the 2 HP I gained at 3500rpm when I sacrficed 4hp at the RPM range I'm using.
Am I making sense to anyone? :)

4-2-1 is good if they get the secondary lengths right (long). I wouldn't sacrifice mid-range personally and I have a very peaky engine in my car.
4-1 - well, I ran that in a 140bhp 1400cc (bored and stroked) 1G Civic using the Jackson Racing/Bassini 4-1 headers and went back to the RS1200 4-2-1 setup and lost 4bhp. But the car was a hell of a lot more drivable.
The SiR is getting 4-2-1 for the same reason.

I've got the DC sports 4-2-1 stainless steel header. Love it. Works hard across the power band... And yes, there's a place for the O2 sensor.
