Squeeky grinding sound need some help

1998 Blazer 4wheel drive

I asked on the U-joint post about how to replace U-joint, but after reading info. I don't think this is my problem. It sounds more like a brake gone bad, I had one shop tell me U-joint and the other said brake. Also while looking under the blazer I noticed a red like packing grease coming from some parts in front that have to do with steering. Any one who can help me would be great. Thank you

When do you hear the noise, when you are accelerating?

I hear it when I am accelerating, and when I am braking. I have been told by one shop U-joint and the other said Brakes. So I could just keep going around to every shop in town but I don't want to drive my blazer so much till I know what it is.

Could your truck need a good greasing???

I bet it could but I am not of a person who does work or anything cars, I fix houses not cars. I was given this blazer about 6 mos. ago from my sons grand parents, I thought it was a good deal but every other week seems something new needs to be fixed. So if I grease it how do I do it? Or would it be best just to take it to a shop and have them do it?

If you saw red grease hanging from steering components, chances are it's already been greased...

Very common problem. It could be other things, but I would definitely try greasing first.

It's a little bit of a dirty job, but WAY EASY ! TOO EASY NOT TO DO ! Can double the life of your suspension.

go to Autozone or one of those stores and buy a grease gun, and a tube of grease (similar to a caulk gun and tube) - prob $15 total. Get the kind of gun that has the flexible rubber nozzle.

get under the front end of your truck and look for all the zirc fittings (grease fittings) you can find. I believe there are 11 total. You'll need to jack it up and remove the front wheels to get to the zirc fittings for the ball joints.

for each fitting, give it about three squirts. you'll see the rubber boot swell as it's filling with grease. don't over-squirt.

should take you 10 minutes.

Please, take this to heart....take it to midas and have them check your breaks, its free and its beter to be safe than sorry, also you will hear this noise while eccelerating and more so while breaking. if they say your breaks are fine then at least you have ruled out that problem. also if it isnt the breaks it could be your transfer case, fron axles, trany, rearend, just to name a few. as for ujoints i have never heard of ujoints grinding at all. I have heard of them clunking becouse of slop, but not grinding. but I guess it could happen.

Could it possibly be a bad wheel bearing? I have had to replace both of mine and it started as a squeak, then turned into a grind after some time (and neglect to fix) Just a thought.

I am not sure what it is as for going to midas to have them check it the one here in town sucks no one there knows crap. I took my grand am there to have brakes done and they never put the caliper on right so I had trun around and go back. The noise is coming from the back this much I know, my sisters friend said to check trans fluid and when I went to do it could not find the dip stick, kinda puzzled me, I know the trans is new in it though. I and my sister tried to check the brakes but the lugs souned as they were going break so we stopped, already had that problem when I first got this thing when a tire got a flat. Like I said I don't know to much about cars but I know some, just never did anything but work under hood. It does sound like a brake though to me and the brakes where not stopping as good the day before the sound started, I don't drive it much so that is when I noticed something wrong. I guess it could be a bad bearing, the guy at one of the shops said it was the U-joint and that bareing where dried out and that is why it making that noise but if was to replace the U-joint it would go away. I will keeping checking other shops though and looking at things myself I just don't want to replace something that don't need it, any more things to look at please tell me. Oh could it be that the fluid level is low in the rear Diff.? I don't know hao to check that but while looking it up it says that could cause this noise.

I took it to another shop today, and he says it is either the rear diff. fluid is low or the brakes. Not sure yet cause he was busy and only could take it for a drive I will be going back later and he look better. But he said it is not U-joints. After I go I post what he found.

Ok so it is the U-joints, so that is nice at least I know for sure. They said they put lube on them for now but I will need to go back and have them done soon. Also found out that my new trans is leaking that is nice.
