98 cavalier with ecu problems.

i have a 98 cavalier with a 2.4 engine and have an intermitten problem with rough idle the mechanick says its the ecu. can i replace it with a used one without reprogramming the ecu at the dealer.

Clean your IAC (Idle Air Control) valve, do a search for IAC and you'll find at least 50 threads on this topic. It's very easy to do and is more than likely causing the problem.

also if it is the ECU can we buy one and just plug it in or it needs to be remaped at the dealer?

I would also suggest checking the EGR, MAP, and MAF (or whatever airflow sensor it uses).

yes, IF the problem is your ecu you will need to have it "remaped"

I really doubt it's the ECU, if something was fried in the ECU, a rough idle would be the least of your problems... I could be wrong, but I doubt it's the ECU.
