93 22re auto trans shift points

After a shop did a repair which required removing the head on my engine, I experienced different shifting points on my auto trans. They said they didn't touch the trans but I know they did something inadvertently to make the shift points diferent as it never shifted funny until I drove it from their shop.
There is a cable from the trans to the top of the engine which effects shift points when adjusted. We adjusted it all the way tighter and it helped the shift points somewhat but not back to normal. It still stays in each gear too long before shifting up. The cable adjustment is at its max but the trans still doesn't shift quick enough. The last shift is not until about 48 mph give or take.
Is there any other device external to the trans that can effect the shift points. The higher rpm shifts are killing my gas mileage and some of the upshifts are harsher than they used to be. The shop acts like I'm crazy because they didn't work on the trans at all but they did remove the head and that trans cable is attached to the head near the top of the engine.
Is anyone famaliar with this cable?

Some auto trannys have a vacum modulator valve. If the vac line for it were reconnected to the wrong vac port you might have your problem.
Sounds like you are adjusting the throttle (aka kickdown) cable.
Any chance your tranny has a power/economy (or similarily labeled) switch on the dash board somewhere and the position has been changed ?
That does change the shift points.

My truck is a 93 22re with auto trans. Maybe nobody at my Toyota dealership is old enough to remember how to fix this old thing. I had them take a look at it. First they said nothing wrong shifts ok to them. I said drive it again. They kept it overnight for some reason and told me the next day maybe the cable was stretched $650 to put in a new one. I wrote down mileage. They only drove it 1 mile.
Good idea to check if the vacuum hoses were put back in the right places. Don't know how to do that without a manual. I think I will trouble a stranger with same truck to look where his vacuum hoses are attached to compare.
Anyone thing I would have betteer luck at AAMCO trans shop. Could they be as dufus as the Toyota dealer?
Any suggestion appreciated. It's very annoying waiting for the 3rd gearshift to happen driving around town. It won't upshift until about 45-50.

Make sure the ECT button is not pushed in on the floor console in front of your shift lever. Look under hood and find the throttle and kick down cable sound like you have the cable adjusted too tight to much hydraulic line pressure. I talked to a master toyota tech and he said pull the boot up the cable so you can see the end check the little stop on the cable, it should be about 1mm from the end on the cable sheathing with the throttle closed(not 1mm passed boot with throttle open like the manual says). My truck shifts much smoother and correctly after the slight adjustment!

The kick down cable is the problem.
I was driving it with the hight shift points and all of a sudden it changed to even higher shift points. I thought that the 2nd shift wouldn't shift at all but I figured it out that the shift point had moved so high that I had to really wind up the rpm to get it to shift. I drove it to another Toyota dealer near where I was. They acted like they had no clue. I would have left it there but they had no loaner cars. Glad I didn't leave it with them.
I then drove to a transmission shop. The guy without looking at it said it needs a kickdown cable ($180). (first Toyota shop said $650).
While there I pulled at the rear part of the cable and saw that the center strand of the cable is attached but the outer strands of the cable were not attached to the metal holder (crimped metal housing) that's supposed to hold it. Now here's the crazy part. After that the trans went back to shifting 95 per cent normal and has continued for 5 days. I called and cancelled installation of the new kickdown cable with the trans shop. I'll wait to see if it has "healed" on its own. The trans shop guy said I was rolling the dice. I guess I'll have to replace the kickdown cable but I wait until it acts up again. Am I being foolish? Should I just go ahead and get it replaced? Can I be hurting the trans by waiting?
