High RPM

I've just purchased a 2006 Mini Cooper and noticed that for the first 2 mins or so after starting the RPMs are rather high (almost 2000) Is this normal? My other cars would go right away to below 1000. I'm not sure if this is the place to ask, but I couldn't find any other recent mini message boards. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
