Itworks fine until I hit the brake. The cruise light blinks on and off, and if I touch the gas pedal, it speeds up a lot. Cut off the cruise and back on again, it will hold speed until. 1996 Limited.

Your problem is the brake switch.
The switch is a two pole in that it has two switches in it one for the brake light and one to disable the cruise.
This why your brake lights still work fine. The cruise side has to be "closed" for the cruise to work.
I took mine apart and bent the side wiper contacts tighter and it has been working now for a couple of years.
They will run around $50 at the stealer.
The Toyota repair fault diagnostics were great in pinpointing this problem.
Email me and I will scan the procedure to follow for you.
